Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-08-07  Maynard5: It is interesting to compare this game with Reti's victory over Bogolyubov in the same tournament. Alekhine wastes time with 8. d3, but then concludes that he should have played d4 at this juncture anyway, which he does four moves later. 14 e4 also looks dubious, since Black is able to free himself, after which White is saddled with an isolated d-pawn. Instead 14. f4 is better. For instance, 14. ... c5, 15. e3 with an unclear position. As the game goes, White loses a pawn, but is able to achieve drawing chances because of bishops of opposite colors. Meanwhile, Bogolyubov overlooks the threat to his own pawn on g7. All in all, not the best day for either player.
Dec-08-20  zydeco: 38...a3 is a win, says Alekhine.
