Kibitzer's Corner
May-17-09  autolycus: This is one of those 'nyah, nyah I dare you to hit me in f2 (or f7)' variations. Good fun.

plang: 5 Nxe5 was first played in the famous game Botvinnik-Keres Moscow 1966 but has been rarely played since. Botvinnik played 8 d3 and went on to win a brilliancy; Ivanchuk's 8 d4 was voted the 6th best innovation in Informant 74 but has never been repeated. Ivanchuk's pawn sacrifice 12 Be2!? sharpened the game considerable; one alternative 12 b3..Nh5 13 Be3..f5 looks very promising for Black. 14..Qe6 was the only move as after 14..Nxd5? 15 cxd..Qd7 16 Bxe5..dxe 17 Qxe5..Rac8 18 Rxc8 and 19 Qh5 wins. Anand pointed out that Ivanchuk could have maintained a solid edge with 17 Bxd6!..Nxe4+ 18 Ke1..Nxd6 19 Qh4..Qxh4 20 gxh. White agreed to the draw as he had no reasonable way to avoid the repetition.
