Kibitzer's Corner
May-30-23  sudoplatov: Caruana's setup looks a bit like something Rubinstein (or Steinitz) would have tried. The idea is that Black has to free his Queen's Bishop and thus go for ...e5 (...c5 isn't enough and the Queenside Fianchetto with ...a6 and ...b5 is not easy.) Black's d5 Pawn becomes a target for White's g2 Bishop and possibly the open King's File (if it exists.)
May-31-23  savagerules: "Wah! Wah! Mommy, I lost. Caruana must be a cheater, just like that very bad man named Niemann. He should be banned from chess." -Carlsen (red eyed and stomping his feet)

  Sally Simpson: I was flicking through the game and stopped at 32. Ne5-d7 (hmmm....that is interesting. All the Knights attacking each other.)

Looks tricky. Knights defending each other are either good or bad. Mostly bad. If one is forced to move it cannot maintain the defence of the other. You need to create a distracting Knight shot with one of the Knight moves.

I poked about for a bit and decided it was a tricky move.

The other two comments here were not too helpful so I went across to Chess.com https://www.chess.com/news/view/202... to see what they said. They give 32.Nd7!!

Ha! I've done that before. Played a move I thought was a two move trick only to discover it's a super-duper move. I also have also played a move I thought was a super-duper move only to discover it was a complete blunder.

In the intro to the game we read.

"Perhaps inspired by Ding's opening choice in game seven of the recent world championship, Carlsen opted for a fight on move one with 1.e4 e6, the French Defence."

How many more of us have started playing 1...e6 (The French Defence don't you know) perhaps inspired by Ding playing it in game 7.

Caruana does not think it was inspired by Ding. (I think). When Magnus played 1...e6 we read about his reaction;

"I was surprised by it, but I wasn't surprised that I was surprised."

Jun-02-23  fabelhaft: Carlsen does fairly often play unusual openings with black against Caruana. He has won with the Scandinavian and Dutch in classical, and played the French before in one of their more exciting games, where he reached a winning position before losing in time trouble:

  perfidious: The French is only an 'unusual opening' amongst world champions since the days of Petrosian.
Jun-10-23  Oldstudent: 30…Nc2 seems to equalize. If 31.Rxe4, then Re7 32.Rc1 Nxa3 33.Rxc8+ Nxc8 34.Nd5 Re6 35.Rf4 Nc2 35.Nc7 Re7 36. Nd5 Re6 37.Nc7 Re7 38. Nd5 Re6 39.Nd5 Re6 is a draw by repetition. If, instead, 32. g5, then Rd8 33.d5 Rde8 34.Ne6 Nxd5 35.Ng4 h6 36.Nh6+ Kh8 37.Nf7+ Kg8 also leads to a draw by repetition.
