Oct-13-22 | | areknames: Must be a mistake, this is not a medium potd! |
Oct-13-22 | | Brenin: 9 ... Qxa1+ wins the R, since 10 Nxa1 allows 10 ... Rc1 mate, so 10 Qb1 Qxb1+ 11 Nxb1 with an easy win for Black. |
Oct-13-22 | | Brenin: <areknames>: Agreed, this is very easy for a Thursday POTD. 7 Rb1 is surely the automatic response in any line where Black plays Qxb2. Then 9 Nd2 is a comically bad move, blocking the B on f4 from defending the vulnerable square c1, and denying the K an escape via d2. |
Oct-13-22 | | mayankk06: The puzzle itself is straightforward due to White's back rank weakness. The b3 Knight can't move due to the threat of Rc1#. So the a1 Rook is undefended. White's opening strategy was basically to lure the Black Queen to b2 and then trap it. In trying so, it kept misplacing its pieces. 9 Nfd2 to prepare the Nc4 Queen trap led to its instant demise. But even earlier it need not have opened the c file via 8 cxd4. Instead maybe just accept a pawn sac and keep developing with tempo. |

Oct-13-22 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: Here in Brazil, today is our kids day, together with the Catholic day of Our Lady 'Aparecida' which is our country patroness. God bless them. Therefore, the King suspects that this is the reason for an easy puzzle today. 9... ♕xa1+ (10. ♘xa1 ♖c1#) 10. ♘b1 ♕xa2 white lose a ♖ with no compensation. |

Oct-13-22 | | jrredfield: Easiest Thursday ever for me. It actually took me at least 20 seconds to confirm 9 ... Qxa1+ because I thought this can't be that easy - I must be missing something. White would have kept things even with 9 h3. |
Oct-13-22 | | mel gibson: That was easy - it's a free Rook.

 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: A much greater challenge would consisted of retrograde analysis--how could the game position arise after 9 moves? |
Oct-13-22 | | agb2002: Black is one pawn ahead.
The knight on b3 is overloaded with the defense of the rook on a1 and c1. Hence, 9... Qxa1+ 10.Nb1 (10.Nxa1 Rc1#) 10... Qxa2 - + [r+2p]. |
Oct-13-22 | | saturn2: I had to look twice for a hidden trap. |
Oct-13-22 | | saturn2: 9. Nfd2 was fatal because it interrupts the Bf4 from c1. |
Oct-13-22 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: Strictly speaking, the puzzle isn't solved until one confirms that White can't trap Black's queen. But that aspect of the solution is insubstantial. It felt like a Monday puzzle to me. ;) |

Oct-13-22 | | stacase: <mel gibson: That was easy - it's a free Rook.> Pretty much what I was going to post. |

 | | perfidious: Thus creating what is known in poker as the Walk of Shame. |
Oct-13-22 | | TheaN: I was also a a bit baffled a this, looking for all the sophisticated ways Black has to deploy to safe his queen. Yet, <9....Qxa1+ 10.Nb1> Nc1/Nxa1 Rc1# and Qb1 Qxb1+ -+. <10....Qxa2 -+> and I'm not really seeing how the queen would even be a trouble. Worst case, Black can give an exchange somewhere to be up a piece and two pawns, but it seems like White's in even more hurt. Not sure how this slipped through. |
Oct-13-22 | | TheaN: This opening is just weird. Bad almost... 1.Nf3 d6 is still okay, though d6 is definitely not Black's most active attempt against the piece opener. 2.d4, first commitment, 2....Bg4?!, what does this even attempt? 3.e4 ± and White's cruising, no threats to the center whatsoever and Black should be wary for Bc4/xf7 stuff. 3.Qd3?! should not be there, I reckon. From here on out both players play considerably more sensible moves up to 7.Nb3?! cxd4 8.cxd4 Rc8 ⩱, 9.Nfd2?? and the rest is history. Kind of feels like a "I want to play something out of the box" from both players which just became weird. |
