Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-16-23  Brenin: Black is a P down, but White's K is exposed and his pieces are poorly placed. I don't see a knock-out blow, but Black can regain the P with 31 ... Nxg4 (since 32 Kxg4 leads to a quick mate as in the game), and he maintains the pressure with threats of Rh6+ and Qh5+. For instance, if White tries to release his N and R with 32 Ne2 then 32 ... Qh5+ and 33 ... Ne3 looks horrible for him. Am I missing something obvious?
Aug-16-23  agb2002: Black is one pawn down.

White threatens Qxe3.

The pawn on g4 is the white king only shield. This suggests 31... Nxg4:

A) 32.Kxg4 Rg6+ 33.Kh3 (33.Kh4 Qf4+ 34.Kh3(5) Qg4#; 33.Kh5 Rxg1+ 34.Kh4 Qf4+ and mate next) 33... Qd7+ 34.Kh4 Qg4#.

B) 32.e5 Nf2+ 33.Kg2 Rg6+ 34.Kf1 Nd3+ wins decisive material.

C) 32.Nf3 Rxf3+ 33.Kxg4 Qf4+ 34.Kh5 g6#.

D) 32.Ne2 Nf2+ 33.Kg2 Nxh1 wins decisive material.

E) 32.Qg3 (trying Qb8+) 32... Nf2+ 33.Kg2 (33.Kh4 Rh6+ 34.Kg5 Qf6#) 33... Rg6 wins decisive material.

Aug-16-23  King.Arthur.Brazil: didn't find any way to a quick win, so I figured that ♙ g4 is blocking the attack. 31...Nxg4

a) capturing it: 32. Kxg4 Rg6+ 33. Kh3 Qe6+ 34. Kh4 Qg4#

b) refusing it: 32. Ne2 Qh5+ 33. Kg3 Nf2 34. h3 Qf3+ 35. Kh2 Qxh3+ 36. Kg1 Qxh1#. c) same as b) 34. Qxf2 Qg5+ 35. Kh3 Rh6+ 36. Qh4 Rxh4#

d) 32. Qh4?? Rh6 33. Kxg4 Rxh4+ 34. Kxh4 Qf2+ 35. Kg4 Qg2+ e) 32. Qg3?? Nf2+ 33. Kg2 Rg6 34. Nf3 Nxh1 or 33. Kh4 Rf4+ 34. Kg5 Nxe4#.

f) 32. Kg2 Nf2 33. Ne2 Nxh1 34. Qxh1 Rf2+ 35. Kg3 Rxe2... I didn't find a direct cjeck-mate line. g) 32. Kg3 Nf2 33. Kg2 Nxh1 34. Kxh1 Rf1 35. Qe2 Qf2... erc. On lines f) and g) can be some possibility of mate, but is not immediate.

Aug-17-23  Mayankk: First thought is to try to mate via 31 ... Rh6+ but doesn't quite work as the King can hide on the g file behind its pawn cover.

So we try the alternative 31 ... Nxg4, stripping the King of its cover and threatening 32 ... Nf2 fork. After 32 Kxg4 which seems forced, Black can close matters with 32 ... Rg6+. 33 Kh3 Qe6+ 34 Kh4 Qg4# or 33 Kh4 Qf4+ 33 Kh3 Qg4#.

Aug-17-23  mel gibson: I didn't look at it for more than 20 seconds.
I wasn't sure of any move.

Stockfish 16 says mate in 23:

31... Nxg4

(31. .. Nxg4 (Ne3xg4 Qe1-g3 h7-h5 Ng1-e2 Rf6-f3 Rh1-e1 Ng4-e3 Ne2-d4 Rf3xg3+ Kh3xg3 h5-h4+ Kg3-h3 Qf7-f2 Re1xe3 Qf2xe3+ Kh3xh4 Qe3xe4+ Kh4-g5 Qe4xd4 h2-h4 Qd4xb2 h4-h5 Qb2-d4 Kg5-f5 Qd4xc4 Kf5-e5 Qc4xa4 Ke5-d6 Qa4-d4+ Kd6-c7 b6-b5 Kc7xb7 b5-b4 Kb7xc6 b4-b3 h5-h6 g7xh6 Kc6-b7 b3-b2 Kb7-a8 Qd4-d5+ Ka8-b8 b2-b1Q+ Kb8-c7 Qb1-b7+) +M23/57 789)
