Nov-10-17  ozmikey: This reminds me of several miserable blitz games I've lost on the Black side of the exchange Caro (which this game transposes into on move 7) before I learned how vital it was to get the queen to c7 early to control that diagonal. Otherwise Black is pretty much doomed to passivity. Those queen-side pawn advances never achieve anything in such situations.

HeMateMe: Ah, from Dicken's David Copperfield. Did they ever hook up?

Annie K.: <Ohio> The reference is to Mr. Barkis, a character from the novel 'David Copperfield' by Charles Dickens. A coach driver who entrusted the young David with this message of proposal to David's childhood nurse Clara Peggotty, whom he only met as she came out to bid David goodbye when his hostile new stepfather sent him off to boarding school. The boy had no idea what the message he delivered meant:

<'Well. I'll tell you what,' said Mr. Barkis. 'P'raps you might be writin' to her?'

'I shall certainly write to her,' I rejoined.

'Ah!' he said, slowly turning his eyes towards me. 'Well! If you was writin' to her, p'raps you'd recollect to say that Barkis was willin'; would you?'

'That Barkis is willing,' I repeated, innocently. 'Is that all the message?'

'Ye-es,' he said, considering. 'Ye-es. Barkis is willin'.'>

The phrase "Barkis is willin'" had turned into something of an idiom for somewhat understated interest and hopefulness. ;)

And yes, she did marry him eventually.

OhioChessFan: Alas, my literary ignorance betrayed me. I've never read it. I was thinking another movie reference...

MissScarlett: How about a special <Cluedo> week featuring a monopoly of puns by <MissScarlett>?

HeMateMe: I've submitted a few puns with classics themes. A couple of years ago I put up <Of Mieses and Men>, a pun on Steinbeck's <Of Mice and Men>.

I've submitted puns using <The Ox-Bow Incident> and <Prisoner of Zenda> that weren't selected.

*Sigh*. There's just no accounting for taste...

Nov-23-19  dumbgai: When I was a kid I read an abridged version of David Copperfield for children, and it didn’t make much of an impression. Then as an adult I read the proper thing and realized that Dickens is really good at telling you that life sucks ass.

HeMateMe: Dickens had a hard life himself, growing up. That's him in Oliver Twist, David Copperfield and so many other young boys in difficult circumstances.
