Dec-29-16  john barleycorn: <IAmMe: Karjakin has his revenge>

too little too late

Dec-29-16  Eyal: Carlsen missed a chance to claim a draw by threefold repetition on moves 79, 81 & 83.
Dec-29-16  ChessHigherCat: Reti or not, here I come!
Dec-29-16  RookFile: Can you claim a draw without a scoresheet? I really don't know, I haven't played in a blitz tournament in years.
Dec-29-16  Eyal: In this tournament, at least, I know that players are claiming both threefold repetitions (https://twitter.com/TarjeiJS/status...) and 50 moves.
Dec-29-16  ajile: What an ending. Good maneuvering to force the check and fork of the rook.
Dec-30-16  Bondsamir: It's never too late!
Dec-30-16  Atking: Well it is just a blitz but I don't understand why Carlsen sacrificed his Q.
Dec-30-16  ChessHigherCat: <Atking: Well it is just a blitz but I don't understand why Carlsen sacrificed his Q.> Good question but I don't think he had any good alternatives. White is "forked" and if he moves the Q then NxR, BxR, and black can probably finagle another minor piece out of the deal (bishop or knight)
Jan-01-17  JCigan: There was no repetition as far as I can see

appeared on the board with Black to play on moves 79, 81 and 83.

Now, this ought to be the game of the day along with that title! I will suggest that title.#

Jan-08-17  miroo: Áðàâî Êàðÿêèí!! Ïîêàçàë ãäå ðàêè çèìóþò!
May-26-22  Calydon: Not only did Carlsen miss a draw by 3-fold repetition, he missed a chance to potentially force a draw by the 50 move limit. On move 88 instead of Kb1 he should have played 88.Rb3+! Kc4 89.Re3 Qa2 and now even with best play Black is theoretically another 38 moves away from mate. The last capture was on move 73 so Karjakin was 16 moves into his 50 move allowance and 38 more moves would have put him at 54.
Sep-27-23  tympsa: You can stop the clock and call arbiter even in blitz if you are sure about 3-fold and if game is recorded on DGT boards. But if you are not sure, your opponent gets extra time on clock. Carlsen was probably too busy to defend the losing position in time trouble to think about 3-fold.
