Jul-16-14 | | Conrad93: In their two other Sicilian games, Lagrave won without much trouble, so why did you bet 200 bucks? |
|
Jul-16-14 | | csmath: Perhaps because these other two games were played by 11-year-old Yifan. |
|
Jul-16-14 | | Conrad93: 11 years old or not, it's still an indication that Lagrave is the better Sicilian player. |
|
Jul-16-14 | | Jim Bartle: <11 years old or not, it's still an indication that Lagrave is the better Sicilian player.> That's going on the "Memorable Quotes" page. |

 | | perfidious: Why would the cretinous <conrag> believe anything which flies in the face of his 'evidence'? If he infested Rogoff with his peculiar trolling, he would be the equivalent of <pipi>: exposed time and again as a fool, he would merely lead with his chin and come back for more in his cack-handed way. |
|
Jul-16-14 | | Strelets: Black demonstrates excellent technique to bring home the full point in an atypical, closed Sicilian position. |
|
Jul-16-14 | | Gregor Samsa Mendel: This may look like an atypical closed Sicilian to some of you, but to me, after 17..e5, it looks like a typical position from the Morphy Defense of the Ruy Lopez. |

Jul-16-14
 | | Sally Simpson: Hi Gregor,
You are right.
click for larger viewShow that position to any experienced player and ask them to guess the opening then the Lopez would get top hit. The Knights look right and even h3 has been played. Just the Lopez Bishop seems to be on the wrong square (b3 or c2). I think a guess it was a Sicilian might score low. Given the chance c5xd4 is usually an automatic move in the Sicilian. In this game it does not get played at all. Suddenly Reminded of the '72 match where Fischer spun a Sicilian into a sub-variation of the Scotch. Spassky vs Fischer, 1972 |

Jul-16-14 | | Everett: Ruy Lopez structure. |
|
Jul-17-14 | | WiseWizard: Transposed into an <ideal> Ruy Lopez for black and MVL shows model play. 23. Ng4? weakens pawns and allows black to challenge a-file with tempo. 30...Bf8-e7-d8-b6! is something to remember. I love seeing ideas like this; improving a piece and strengthening position without conceding anything. |
|
Jul-17-14 | | jphamlore: I'm thinking this game shows MVL at his very best now that he is a full-time chess professional, because I think he prepared this exactly to defeat his opponent. Hou Yifan already won a game as White this tournament with the Canal-Sokolsky attack, but examining her games as White, one sees she her best win as White versus a Ruy Lopez is versus Granda Zuniga. Like many other players such as say Wei Yi, Hou Yifan's wheelhouse is to kill Sicilians playing White. So why not just play 1. .. e5? Well MVL isn't exactly a Ruy Lopez player himself as Black, at least not yet. |
|
Jul-17-14 | | mrandersson: This is quite like the kopec system white plays here. Its a system an old club player i new would play all the time been while since seen it at a high level. |

 | | perfidious: <Everett: Ruy Lopez structure.> Sure is.
<WiseWizard: Transposed into an <ideal> Ruy Lopez for black....> No dice--there was no direct transposition, though the ideas are the same and this is indeed good for Black. |

Jul-17-14 | | Conrad93: <That's going on the "Memorable Quotes" page.> Because it's true? |

Jul-17-14
 | | perfidious: The memorable gormlessness of your statement won a place on that page--there is no 'proof' of any sort, though that is not at all surprising. |
|
Jul-17-14 | | CP6033: csmath Something you seem to be forgetting is that Maxime Vachier-Lagrave is only Magnus Carlsen's age, in 2005 he would've maybe been 13, perhaps a bit younger. |
|
Jul-17-14

Jul-18-14 | | 1d410: <Conrad> why did I bet 200 bucks? It was stupid. She had just beaten Anish Giri and I thought maybe she would thrive in the new environment more than these other guys who had worn out their places. |

Jul-19-14 | | Ulhumbrus: 17...e5? transposes into a Ruy Lopez Breyer type pawn formation. one better than usual for Black but also offers White a pawn on b5 18 d5? avoids opening the e file for Black's rook on e8 but is it necessary? Instead of this 18 axb5! axb5 19 dxe5 dxe5 20 Bxb5 wins a pawn and on 18 axb5 axb5 19 dxe5 Nxe5 20 Bxb5 attacks Black's rook on e8 Instead of 21 Ra3, 21 Ng4 is more flexible because on 21...Bxg4 22 hxg4 White may want to play his queen's rook to the h file without loss of time Instead of 27 g5, 27 Nf1 prepares g3 and Kg2 as well as the manoeuvre Nf1-e3-g4 Instead of 31 Be3, 31 Nf1 prepares to bring the N to g4 Instead of 49 Kg2 one alternative is the pawn sacrifice 49 c5 eg 49...dxc5 50 Qa6 Qc7 51 Qc6 Qxc6 52 dxc6 Nb6 53 Nxc5 |

Jul-22-14 | | madlydeeply: ha VeeLaGee uses his queen all over the perimeter to tweak the pawn structure. Would this be Karpovian? Fun stuff |

Jul-22-14 | | madlydeeply: was white in zugzwang at move 59? |
|
Jul-22-14 | | madlydeeply: another rossolimo that looks like a ruy.

maybe its a Rossolimo thing |

Jul-22-14 | | chinokoli: Interesting that black made 7 straight moves with his dark squared bishop from move 31 to move 37. |
