Nonetheless, if I may punctuate, is not that violence should not be used upon children (or taxpayers, for that matter) because it doesn't yield the 'expected' results, but plainly because the victims are unwilling to be treated violently. |

Playing the speed tie-break games first would mean even more contamination of the long chess games (from the speed tie-break games) than there is already. Indeed the stated goal of playing tie-breaks first is to affect how the long games are played. Ideally there would be no need for any tie-breaks other than a couple more long games. Or at least ideally we would minimize the contamination, not increase it.Under its current rules, chess at the elite level suffers horribly from a huge draw rate (60%, and higher in matches). Perhaps just enough relief could be achieved by slight changes to the castling rule, to the repetition rule, to the draw offer rules, and possibly a bit more. By chess suffers more than most competitive creations from the - Tyranny of Tradition. Maybe even the slightest chess rule change would be an intolerable violation of tradition a priori. But the draw problem is awful too. The draw problem seems too damaging to be left unsolved for so long. This final game was oddly skipped by the otherwise excellent documentary film linked to from:
