 | | Domdaniel: This is why I gave up playing the Benoni. |

 | | Open Defence: ah haaaa!!! he plays the Benoni!!! we have a backbencher in the house!!! |

 | | Phony Benoni: And what, pray tell, is wrong with the Benoni? I know of no better opening for learning the invaluable art of saving lost positions. |
Feb-12-09 | | blacksburg: scandinavian is also pretty good for that. |

 | | Open Defence: <Phony Benoni: And what, pray tell, is wrong with the Benoni? I know of no better opening for learning the invaluable art of saving lost positions.> and also losing safe positions |

 | | ray keene: this game shd be reclassified under my games and it was played in dublin 1977 not 1978 |
Feb-13-09
 | | ray keene: this game is now in its right place |
Feb-13-09
 | | Domdaniel: <ray> Thanks for the correction. I'm amazed you should have such accurate records and/or recall. I knew it was 1977 as I found my original scoresheet recently, but somehow I inputted the wrong year. As for the game being in its right place, quite. In another sense, though, it was better off lost. |

Feb-13-09
 | | ray keene: i am afraid i had no records at all-i just remembered which year it was-tho i do not recall whether it was played in the simul at trinity college dublin or one of the others |

 | | Open Defence: funny this is what I see on the main page
Ray Keene GM vs G McCarthy, 1978
and when I click on here I see
Raymond Keene vs Gerry McCarthy

Feb-13-09 | | number 23 NBer: <Phony Benoni: And what, pray tell, is wrong with the Benoni? I know of no better opening for learning the invaluable art of saving lost positions.> I'd be able to provide you with about half a dozen. Unfortunately I can't find my last 6 scoresheets. Maybe I burned them... |

Nov-15-10 | | Octal: What was the thought behind 21 ... f5? |
Feb-06-11
 | | Domdaniel: < What was the thought behind 21 ... f5?>
Desperation, I suspect: Black's position is already very, very bad. After the blunder 14...Nb6, his pieces just get relentlessly pushed onto bad squares. I *think* the idea was that White's about to play f5 anyway, with a powerful attack that wins at least a pawn in many lines. By playing ...f5 first, Black hopes either to get some piece activity or exchange Queens at the cost of a pawn. Illogical, I know. |

 | | Domdaniel: I've just noticed that I'm on Ray Keene's ignore list. Why oh why, Mondo? I've been facetious, I admit ... but I've also defended you from time to time. Is this how you repay loyalty, albeit the sarcastic variety? |
Jan-29-14 | | RedShield: How do you find out who's ignoring you? It sounds very exciting. Is there a record I can aim to beat? |
Jan-29-14 | | RedShield: I have a confession to make. Ray has beaten me in a simul, as well. Alas, the game is lost to posterity. Somewhat discombobulated, I tore the scorecard into a thousand pieces and tossed them to the wind. God knows where they are now. I remember the opening though: 1.e4 e5 2.f4...I essayed the Fischer Defence. |

 | | OhioChessFan: If you want to know who's ignoring you, go to their forum, type out a post, and if you're on ignore, a policeman will pop up when you try to kibitz. |
Jan-29-14 | | RedShield: But Keene doesn't have a forum. He doesn't need one. |
Jan-29-14
 | | Domdaniel: It can also apply to player pages. |
Jan-30-14 | | RedShield: I'm disappointed. There should be a facility here to identify the scaredy-cats. |
Jan-30-14
 | | Domdaniel: <RedShield> The strange thing is that I have no idea what I might have done to offend Keene. He has answered my questions on his page in the past ... but now Mr Plod pops up to tell me I'm de trop. Maybe I forgot to grovel, that time in Simpsons on the Strand... |
Jan-30-14 | | RedShield: Fear not. I'll have a word in his shell-like and vouch for bona-fides. Do you have any links to the nobility of England or Ireland? |
Jan-30-14 | | Shams: <Domdaniel> You've even been one of Keene's stronger defenders. A line from Edward Luttwak occurs to me: the ultimate proof of political imbecility is to confuse your friends with your enemies. |
Jul-07-14
 | | perfidious: <Dom:.... but now Mr Plod pops up to tell me I'm de trop.> This is risible, but what do I know, anyway?
<Maybe I forgot to grovel, that time in Simpsons on the Strand...> Well dammit, why dincha?
<Shams: A line from Edward Luttwak occurs to me: the ultimate proof of political imbecility is to confuse your friends with your enemies.> Maybe not only in politics-might be imbecility, period. |
