Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-30-08  euripides: Looks like a helpmate at the end.
Jul-30-08  messachess: This is a very interesting game. I hope people study it. After 18., positionally the game was white R + an extra pawn vs. 2 N's--risky for white in the middle game in my view. With all that other fire power in the black camp, white has already conceded the initiative to those mobile knights. But, of course, that's only theory. In the actual game, Alekseev (with some interesting help from those knights), instructs in the art of active defense against a very game try by Onischuk--a really great game.
Jul-30-08  dycotiles: What happened here? Wasn't white winning? Can anybody post the mate threats ....
Jul-30-08  Ashram64: 53. Kb6 Bc5+ 54. Ka6 Ra8#
Jul-30-08  OneArmedScissor: I love games like these. The position is so delicate.

Check It Out: Or 53. Bc7 Ne8 and white can't avoid losing the bishop.

I don't think white was ever winning in this game. Very solid play by Alekseev. Onishuck, I hope you bounce back soon.

Check It Out: <al wazir: 43. Bb5 was either a mistake or a blunder.>What's the difference between the two? :)

Jul-31-08  Ulhumbrus: Although 14 Nb5? looks troublesome for Black, it in fact loses time because it does not win the c7 pawn, and if the N has later to come back to c3, it will have lost two moves for development. 14 Qd3 or 14 Qd2 connects the Rooks.

After 15...Qd7 White's N has to withdraw or make a sacrifice. This is a lesson in how strongly placed Black's QN is on a6.

According to Lasker, Steinitz advises the attacker to aim his attacks towards weaknesses. Black has defended the c7 pawn with his QN, so White could be directing an attack towards a point which is not in fact a weakness.

Jul-31-08  OneArmedScissor: <15. Nc6> proved to be pretty dubious.

A blunder is a really bad mistake.

Aug-08-08  OneArmedScissor: The machines gives white an edge until <15. Nc6> and then it got progressively worse for white thereafter.
