Bishoprick: Sad to see Karpov beaten by people who, once upon a time, he would have spanked.
Nov-22-07  Jim Bartle: True, but he apparently still enjoys playing.

Still, I don't see Ivanchuk as of those "he would have spanked," at least after Ivanchuk reached the elite (1990?).

Nov-22-07  xeroxmachine: Yeah he would so have spanked him back in 1991: Ivanchuk vs Karpov, 1991 Ivanchuk vs Karpov, 1992

Especially in 1993 he would have spanked him so hard:Ivanchuk vs Karpov, 1993

Nov-22-07  Jim Bartle: I left out a word, so my meaning got muddled. I meant to say that Karpov would have not have been expected to "spank" Ivanchuk in the years they were both near the top.
Nov-22-07  Phoenix: These were blitz games. Equivalent of internet speed chess...played for fun, nothing more, nothing less.
Nov-28-07  xeroxmachine: Dis game also blitzo what are you talking abut????
Dec-03-07  Zonszein: I like 29-Na5
Jan-26-09  M.D. Wilson: Ivanchuk had good results vs. Karpov, although the latter held an edge until recent times. Blitz games should not be written off completely, but classical chess lends itself to superior games.
