Honza Cervenka: <I like 20...Qa8> What about 21.Qxb4 then?
Aug-01-06  Ulhumbrus: 20 Qa4 does one useful thing, attacking the b4 pawn. If Motozevich defends it by 20 ...d5, that frees White's e pawn to advance. However on 21 e5 the e5 pawn is pinned, although it attacks the Nf6 and on 21..h6 22 Nf3 Ne4 loks promising.
Aug-01-06  Aristarch: 20. ... Qa8 doesn't look like Moro - too boring! He's more likely to play 20. ... d5!
Aug-01-06  grolich: doesn't Qa8 reduce blacks chances after Qxb4 QxR QxB?
Aug-01-06  CapablancaFan: Volo immediately goes to work on the dangerous pawns.

  Mateo: <Honza Cervenka: <I like 20...Qa8> What about 21.Qxb4 then?> 20...Qa8 21.Qb4 Qa2.
Aug-01-06  TylerD: honza: then Qxa2...
Aug-01-06  zabbura2002: ... d5 is also necessary to free the bishop
Aug-01-06  chessmind: Qa8 seems like a proper move
Aug-01-06  Bumcrot: 20...Qa8 21.Qb4 Qa2 22. Qb7 ... back to even material with only one passed pawn.

plang: Another example of why the Ruy Lopez is often not "boring"
Aug-01-06  AdrianP: Would Volokitin like to play d5 himself, I am wondering? It fixes the d6-pawn and blunts both bishops, but Moro would play ...g6 and ...Bg7 and the Bishop will be a huge asset on the long diagonal. Volokitin's only chance of a blockade is on the dark-squares. If Moro feels that Volokitin is not going to play d5 himself, it's worth postponing it for a bit keeping control of e5.
Aug-01-06  zabbura2002: looking back at it, I think ...d5 is not so good after all since e5 will block the center.
Aug-01-06  CapablancaFan: d5 is a strong move, but has the potential to trigger key exchanges. With Moro being down an exchange, the question is are the 2 passed pawns strong enough to provide adequate compensation?
Aug-01-06  fxenderby: anyone knows the opening in carlsen-radjabov... thanks
Aug-01-06  grolich: Well, I take it back. although Qa8 Qb4 QxR Qxb7 seems like even material with only one passed pawn, after Re7 followed by h6 and Rxe4 black is just winning...
Aug-01-06  willychess: I think Qa8 is the best because ends with white tactical posibilities which are the only hope for him
Aug-01-06  danielkhan: so is moro gonna lose on time ?
Aug-01-06  herby rawley: does....nd5 have any merit????
Aug-01-06  AdrianP: What's wrong with ...Qb6
Aug-01-06  Offield: If 20...d5 21.e5 what does black do? 21...b3 just helps white to play 22.Rae2 with threats, and 21...h6 is ugly.

Honza Cervenka: <Mateo: <Honza Cervenka: <I like 20...Qa8> What about 21.Qxb4 then?> 20...Qa8 21.Qb4 Qa2.> 22.Qxb7 I see that it gives the exchanche back. But what next to do for black?

Mateo: After 20...Qa8 21.Qa8 Ra8 22.Ra8 Ba8, Black traded 2 useful heavy pieces and reaches a good ending. First of all, White would have to protect his e pawn, and then think about the 2 connected passed pawns.
Aug-01-06  micahtuhy: Anyone else think 20 Qb6?
Aug-01-06  AdrianP: <Honza> I think ...Re7 and ...h6 is the problem at the end of your line.
