Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-02-09  Marmot PFL: At age 59 Anderssen was still a formidable opponent.
Oct-02-09  Boomie: I wonder if Winawer resigned too early. What does black have after 46. Qxc6+ Kxc6 47. Bc3? If there is a win, it will be a long and difficult struggle.
Oct-03-09  sneaky pete: <Boomie> Winawer didn't resign, he had already lost this round 1 game from the July 16 morning session on move 37 by exceeding the time limit. Some more moves were played (and recorded and included in the tournament book) up till the hour for the round 2 games, played in the afternoon of the same day.
Mar-18-16  zanzibar: <sneaky> is correct, allow me to add this:

From p36/50 of the tournament book:

<On Monday July 16 morning 9:00, the tournament took under the occurred halls of Protect garden its beginning, and the masters pairs in the manner prescribed for the first round to the struggle together. A dense Corona gathered around the table at which Winawer the doyen Anderssen sat opposite, and pursued by businesswomen tester to attention the history of between two a Sicilian opening evolving game. From time to Time left individual groups the table and retreated to the outdoors the garden back to the discussion begun in an undertone continue forced looser manner or to the phases of the game on the board study. Unfortunately, this game occurred a little Difference in that Winawers pm at the 37th course of a Overstepping the time indicated, as he himself claimed that He actually could not have exceeded the time, and that his watch might in any part of the opponent unjustly remained transition. Dr. Max Lange as a member of the committee but decided as meaning that the game for Winawer as lost did apply, and in view of the strict determination of the Tournament Rules remained two fighters only left to add to this Decision, which was confirmed by the referee Office and also during distant duration of the congress by either side learned a challenge.>

So, Winawer was a little upset by the forfeit, disavowing it. A better, more precise translation might make that clearer. Here's the original text:
