Sep-24-04  Evo: Ah, ??? COOL!!!!!
Sep-24-04  ConLaMismaMano: Is this the first time Carlsen loses to a woman?
Sep-24-04  percyblakeney: Here is an earlier example of that, against Gabriela Hitzgerova in 2001: G Hitzgerova vs Carlsen, 2001
Sep-24-04  Jesuitic Calvinist: Well played by Lahno; the play immediately before and after 22....Nxg2 was very nice.

This game probably shows an understandable weakness in Carlsen at his age; he did not seem comfortable in this type of slower, more closed position.

Also, in general after losing the pawn he was too prepared to exchange pieces.

Maybe time trouble was a factor, but I think it was a mistake to allow the knight ending with 38.Ne3 rather than going into the queen ending with Nxb6; the Queen ending would have been more difficult for Black to win.

Sep-24-04  acirce: I mostly commented on this game live.. 21.Qh5?? was a blunder of the kind so characteristic of his play lately, he had to accept the equal position after 21.Bd2 or something. And I also expected 38.Nxb6.
Sep-24-04  percyblakeney: Lahno missed 23. ... Nf4+ with Bg5 in the next move, and white will lose the queen after Qxg5 (Nxh3+ if the king went to g1) or be mated (Qxh3# if the king went to f1).
Sep-24-04  percyblakeney: Even more correct: 23. ... Nf4+ 24.Kf1 Bg5 25.Qxg5 Qxh3+ 26.Kg1 Qg2# in that line. 25.Bxf7+ would be followed by Kh8, and the queen can't escape.

HeMateMe: I like how black plays the Petrov here. Without an early d5, there is no tension in the center to worry about. Black just makes a bolt hole for her Bishop on b7, and quietly develops her pieces. Very safe system.

And, she swindled young MC out of a pawn and won the game.
