Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-31-05  Jaymthegenius: The Calabrese countergambit!! How unsound! I have to travel back in time to laugh at NN for loosing this.
Feb-02-05  Milo: I think Greco made up most of these games anyway, although this one looks real.
Feb-04-05  Jaymthegenius: White would win this easy, by the way if he didnt castle.
Feb-17-05  InspiredByMorphy: <Jayme> <White would win this easy if he didnt castle.> How so? Black threatens mate if you havent noticed. The only other move white has is 15.Ng1 which loses to 15. ...Qxg2 . Before leaving such an opinion maybe you should back it up with some analysis and you might gain some credibility.
Mar-04-05  Jaymthegenius: 15.Qg3,Qxg3 16.hxg3,Bxh3 17.gxh3,Nb5 (or any) 17.b3 should hold the advantage for white, blacks doubled e-pawns look disgusting to me, and Black has the bishop pair in an open position, so
Mar-04-05  Jaymthegenius: Correction: 15.Qg3,Qe2#, I say this possition should have been avoided earlier.
Mar-04-05  InspiredByMorphy: <Jaym> < say this possition should have been avoided earlier.> How so? Where is it that you think white went wrong?
Mar-04-05  Jaymthegenius: 3.Bxg8 isnt what I would call the best move, true it hinders blacks kingside castle, but white is down a bishop in an open position, and 3.exf5,Nf6 4.d6 should hold the advantage for white for a while.
Mar-04-05  Jaymthegenius: I mean 4.d3,d5 5.g4 should hold it even further.
Mar-04-05  InspiredByMorphy: <Jaym> 3.exf5 Nf6 4.d3 d5 5.g4 drops a piece by 5. ...dxc4 . 4.d3 blocks in whites bishop from retreat and after 4. ...d5 the bishop has nowhere useful to go. 3.Bxg8 serves different functions including alleviating this problem. It wins white a pawn, takes away the option of castling for black, and avoids wasting tempi by later allowing black to push the bishop around.
Mar-05-05  Jaymthegenius: I didnt mean 4.d5 I meant 4.d6 or Nc6 or any! But if 4.d5 then Bb3 should still hold whites advantage. THIS IS A FISCHER DEFENSE IN REVERSE! No way black can win this!
Mar-05-05  InspiredByMorphy: <Jaym> <4.d6 or Nc6 or any! But if 4.d5 then Bb3 should still hold whites advantage.> 4. ...d6 and 4. ...Nc6 are weak moves. 4. ...d5 gives black a solid center. 5.Bb3 Bxf5 and black has a great position. Opening Explorer A center, an open f-file, and an good bishop (active) compared to whites bad bishop (inactive) on b3. E Falkenhagen vs E J Diemer, 1977 <THIS IS A FISCHER DEFENSE IN REVERSE!> Your delusional. In the Fischer defense 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Nf3 d6 4.Bc4 h6 is played. Notice black doesent develop the bishop to c5 before playing d6 as white does in the position we speak of. This makes a huge difference. 1.e4 e5 2.f4 Bc5 3.Nf3 exf4 4.d4 gives white a positional advantage. This is what the position we speak of looks like. Opening Explorer After 1.e4 e5 2.Bc4 f5 3.exf5 Nf6 white should play 4.Nc3 as Morphy did at the young age of 11.
Mar-06-05  Jaymthegenius: Maybe a Fischer defense would be innapropriate here (O.K! I admit it! Morphy defeat's me! But not if I play an english or 1.b4)

Maybe a reversed falkbeer would be appropriate here 1.e4,e5 2.Bc4 (I usually play this in kingpawn games if I am on even level, only play King gambit against weaker opposition),f5 3.d4,exd4 4.e5,d6 5.Nf3,dxe5 6.Nxe5! Probably is a vertual refutation of 2.f5

Mar-06-05  InspiredByMorphy: <Jaym> If 1.e4 e5 2.Bc4 f5 3.d4 exd4 4.e5 d5 5.exd6ep Qxd6 leaves black up a pawn. 3.d4 is a good move though.

Honza Cervenka: I think that the best way to meet the Calabrese Countergambit is to handle the position like King's Gambit Declined with 2...Bc5 and extra tempo after 3.d3 Nf6 4.Nf3 etc.
