Nov-04-09  WhenHarryMetSally: "Why not 14.Nb1 instead of 14.Bxd5 ?
Loose Bishop but not the game !"

In reality i think when you've lost a bishop off the board it's game over anyway, unless you have some forcing moves.

But it is disappointing to see white squander his first mover advantage and play a serf when he should be a lord.

May-17-10  SirChrislov: My game featured a queen winning Boden's after 15.b3??(which he retracted) 15...Ba3+.

R Schloss vs C G Jaime, 2009

Jul-20-10  jbtigerwolf: This is absolutely beautiful and it was just genius how he saw it coming after the O-O-O and maybe just before.

The Bishop move is aesthetic and only a sealing Knight or Bishop move in the middle looks better.

It was just killer chess. The more I examine the Philidor, the more impressed I am. That little battle of the pawn-centre in Black's forecourt at the start of the game is just so important.

Apr-25-11  Tigranny: Wouldn't White be fine had he castled on the king's side?
May-24-11  Llawdogg: Wow! Sac, sac, mate. With criss-crossing bishops.
Jul-13-11  Oceanlake: Edward Lasker vs Fritz Englund is an amusing example. A deep sigh of relief followed by....
Jul-13-11  Sho: The famous Boden's mate: even (or especially) patzers know of it.

HeMateMe: Those double Bishops against the Q-side castle position. If White had had tactical training software, he would have seen this one coming...
Jul-13-11  nolanryan: in case ur wondering, one person's name is boden and the other person's name is schulder and the pun prob means that schulder is annoyed by boden. funny one!
Jul-13-11  Libispusher: the pun stuff is way up on this one. hilarious.
Jul-13-11  rilkefan: <the pun prob means that schulder is annoyed by boden>

I think the pun is on "burden to shoulder". "Boden" is not so far from "boyden", a la newyorkese.

playground player: Because so many beginners use it, and without much success, the Philidor is an underrated opening for Black. Which is a good reason to use it! (After learning its finer points, of course.)
Jul-13-11  kevin86: Wow! The original Boden Mate!!
Jul-13-11  theodor: 14.Bd4
Jul-13-11  sfm: It was so easy for Black, because anyone knows Boden's mate.

Phony Benoni: Everyone keeps saying this game was won by Boden's Mate. So why is it listed under his name?
Jul-13-11  DrMAL: Moves 3-6 on both sides were a great example of mutual inaccuracy, worse than 9.f4 but not as bad as 13.O-O-O that vied for the unbrilliancy prize 14.Bxd5 ran away with!
Jul-13-11  WhiteRook48: that pun is... so ... bad

Nov-28-11  IRONCASTLEVINAY: i think this mating pattern is known as boden pattern ,no?
Apr-01-12  Infohunter: <sfm: It was so easy for Black, because anyone knows Boden's mate.>

Easy to say after the fact, but Boden himself had to find it while playing over the board.

<Phony Benoni: Everyone keeps saying this game was won by Boden's Mate. So why is it listed under his name?>

Because this is the game wherein Boden discovered the pattern.

<IRONCASTLEVINAY: i think this mating pattern is known as boden pattern ,no?>

Right you are--for the reason already stated.

Phony Benoni: <Infohunter> I was trying to make a pun on the alternate meaning of "Mate". It was obviously not a good one if I have to explain it.

Oops! Don't blame yourself, <Phony Benoni>; my thinking was just too tunnel visioned to see that you were making a pun, which is so very obvious now that you've pointed it out. Sometimes I just focus too narrowly: I remember a few months ago when Boris Becker played a losing game of chess against a recognized master <cg> tagged it as GOTD with "Tennis, Anyone?" In my post I wondered what the "tennis" connection was, not thinking at all about Becker's real profession. Boy, did that make me feel like a yo-yo!
