Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-26-04  Knight13: This game was carefully played by Alexander MacDonnell and Louis Charles Mahe De La Bourdonnais.
Oct-27-05  who: Fritz thinks 49.Ne4 was the losing move. 49.Nd7 would hold.
Feb-02-12  Knight13: If 23. Nxe4, then 23... Qb3 24. Qxb3 Nxb3 and Black regains his pawn. Or 24. Qc1 Qd5 25. Qc2 Nb3.

Honza Cervenka: Morphy's recommendation 47.Ne4 is quite dubious, as black can play 47...b4! with idea 48.Kc4 b3! 49.Kxb3 Kd5 50.Nd6 Kxd4 -+. 47.Nb3 was correct continuation holding the position equal.

  Honza Cervenka: 48.Nb3 was still a chance to hold the ending, for example 48...Kb5 49.Kd3 Ka4 50.Kc4 Nd5 51.Nd2 Ne3+ 52.Kc5 b3 53.d5! Nxd5 54.Kd6 b2 55.Kxe6 etc.

  Honza Cervenka: 49.Ne4 was a howler but 49.Nd7 b3 50.Nb6+ Kc6 51.Nc4 Kb5 52.Kc3 Ka4 was hardly sufficient, for example 53.Nd2 Nd5+ 54.Kb2 Kb4 55.Nxb3 Kc4 56.Nc5 Nc7 57.Kc2 Kxd4 58.Nd3 Nd5 59.Kd2 g6 (diagram)

and white is in zugzwang, as 60.Ke2 Nc3+ 61.Kd2 Ne4+ is not an option. So he must drop Pe5 here.

May-19-22  Immortal Gambit: I have to assume this commentary was redacted, as there's no way Morphy would have used algebraic notation.
