Mar-17-13  5hrsolver: Thanks Phony Benoni
Mar-17-13  Patriot: <morf> It was a bit of a visualization error for me with 16.b4. I can't ask for too much though because I was very sleepy when I worked on it around 12:30am.

15.Be7+ made a lot of sense to me because it sets up a discovered check. I just didn't realize it worked immediately after 15...Ke8!

I couldn't agree with you more about the powerful pawn on d6 restricting black. Black's development is really awful. It reminds me of some bad positions I seem to get into and I wonder "what happened?"

Mar-17-13  Patriot: <zb2cr> Thanks! But feel free to comment on what you were thinking at the time. I think by doing this, it has helped me improve over time. Occasionally someone may say "But Patriot...move X is much better because of Y" and that provides feedback. There were other times I challenged other's ideas and ended up learning something in the process.

I'm only making a suggestion though--do what you want. Your opinion matters!

Dionysius1: Hi <Morfishine> (Something I need, and the fishine season's just about to start!). It's even better than you say because 17...Ng5 18 Qe7 is mate immediately. The N guard fore7 has been distracted.
Mar-17-13  bachbeet: That ng5 is a great move that seals it.
Mar-17-13  KnightPusher: Barely guessed Re8+ but (as I usually just guess) didn't fully carry it out. What a sweet move Ng5 is.
Mar-17-13  morfishine: <Dionysius1> Yes, on your comment: <It's even better than you say because 17...Ng5 18 Qe7 is mate immediately. The N guard fore7 has been distracted> I realized that too late to delete the post! No matter, Black is deader than a mackerel

FYI: I like fishing too, but the username is a conglomeration of morphy, fischer and alekhine...I wonder if any of them fished?

Mar-17-13  BlackSheep: Today's POTD would have been harder if Kingscrusher (of youtube fame) hadnt done a video of this game in the last week . (coincidence or conspiracy , who can say ?)

al wazir: <bharat123>: Thanks. I don't feel too ashamed that I failed to find that myself.

But you left out one line: <15...Bxe7 16. dxe7> Nxe7 17. Qxe7 Rf7 (17...Qb6 18. Qe5+ Kg8 19. Bh6; 17...Qd8 18. Qxd8 Rxd8 19. Bxd8) 18. Qf6+ Kg8 19. Bh6.

Apr-11-14  yureesystem: Black cannot take on 15...Nxe7? 16.Qxe7+ Kg8 17.Ng5 < mate soon> 17...h6 18 Qxf7 mate. GM.Rossolimo conduct this attack well against the uncastle king.

sachistu: I suspect this was a casual or off-hand game as Romanenko and his wife gave a musical presentation following the Bad Gastein tournament (Bad Gastein being a spa town in Salzburg province.) See Wiener Schachzeitung, 1948, p4.

Wiener Schachzeitung describes Romanenko as a chess and concert master. He was not a participant in the Bad Gastein tournament (though Rossolimo was). Apparently, this is Ivan Romanenko, who immigrated to the US in 1949, and whose death was mentioned in the Sharon (PA) Herald (and other sources).

Sep-28-15  kevin86: The only way that black can avoid mate from the white knight is to stop it with the knight...after which white's queen will mate.
Sep-28-15  Dr. J: It's easy to be dazzled by the very beautiful winning variation starting with 13 Re8+, but is it really a faster win than, say, 13 Qe2, analyzed by <patzer2>, <FSR>, and others? Black could have bailed out with 16...Kf8 17 Bxa5 Bxb2, and White, ahead only Q v. R+B (and a large lead in development) still has a slog ahead of him.
Nov-16-15  transpose: This has got to be one of my fav games of all time. Simply a beautiful miniature. Bravo Rossolimo!
Apr-02-16  tanu123: Fantastic!

Penguincw: Missed the in-between move, Bg5. (well, wrong order)
Feb-23-19  Walter Glattke: Option 10.-Kf8 11.Ng5 Nh6 or 11.Bg5, also difficult.
Feb-23-19  pdxjjb: Apparently this game was a daily puzzle back in 2013. But that first time, the puzzle was at move 12 or 13.

Today 2019-02-23 the puzzle is 10. ?

This is problematic. Certainly 10. Nd6+ is a move that most players would consider. And if black captures the N, fireworks can ensue.

But what if black plays the quieter 10 ... Kf8? I couldn't find a "solve the puzzle" type combination after 10 ... Kf8.

Engine confirms there isn't one. Nothing really puzzle-quality with any immediate win of material. Sure, black's position is terrible, but that's not your typical puzzle ending.

Engine says white's best continuation is 11. Ne4 b6. with 11. Nxc8 Rxc8 second best.

Feb-23-19  agb2002: I know this game.
Feb-23-19  bubuli55: Amazing!
Feb-23-19  Walter Glattke: Also Nxf7 seems to be good for white after 10.-Kf8 11.Nxf7 Kxf7 12.Ng5+ Ke8 13.Qf3 Nh6 14.e6 dxe6 15.Nxe6 Bxe6 16.Bxh6 Bxh6 17.Rxe6 Qc7 18.Rae1 Bf8 19.Qf6 Rg8 20.Rxe7+ Bxe7 21.Rxe7+ Kd8 22.Rxh7+ Kc8 23.Rxc7+ Kxc7 24.Qf7+. White stands better then.
Feb-23-19  malt: Had 10.Nd6+ ed6 11.Bg5! Qb6 12.ed6+ Kf8
13.Qe2
missed 13.Re8+.
Nice game !
Feb-23-19  Grandma Sturleigh: Stockfish prefers 13. Qe2 (mate in 17) over 13. Re8 because White has no quick mate after 16...Kf8 in the game line.
