I can't ask for too much though because I was very sleepy when I worked on it around 12:30am. 15.Be7+ made a lot of sense to me because it sets up a discovered check. I just didn't realize it worked immediately after 15...Ke8! I couldn't agree with you more about the powerful pawn on d6 restricting black. Black's development is really awful. It reminds me of some bad positions I seem to get into and I wonder "what happened?" |

Occasionally someone may say "But Patriot...move X is much better because of Y" and that provides feedback.  | | sachistu: I suspect this was a casual or off-hand game as Romanenko and his wife gave a musical presentation following the Bad Gastein tournament (Bad Gastein being a spa town in Salzburg province.) See Wiener Schachzeitung, 1948, p4. Wiener Schachzeitung describes Romanenko as a chess and concert master. He was not a participant in the Bad Gastein tournament (though Rossolimo was). Apparently, this is Ivan Romanenko, who immigrated to the US in 1949, and whose death was mentioned in the Sharon (PA) Herald (and other sources). |

Black could have bailed out with 16...Kf8 17 Bxa5 Bxb2, and White, ahead only Q v. R+B (and a large lead in development) still has a slog ahead of him. |

This is problematic. Certainly 10. Nd6+ is a move that most players would consider. And if black captures the N, fireworks can ensue. But what if black plays the quieter 10 ... Kf8? I couldn't find a "solve the puzzle" type combination after 10 ... Kf8. Engine confirms there isn't one. Nothing really puzzle-quality with any immediate win of material. Sure, black's position is terrible, but that's not your typical puzzle ending. Engine says white's best continuation is 11. Ne4 b6. with 11. Nxc8 Rxc8 second best. |
