Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-03-04  Morty: 7. ...Kg8 was a bad decision. But hey, this game was played between kids under 10, so I'll cut them some slack.
Dec-10-04  Knight13: I've fallen into this kind of idiotic mate before. Now I know how to avoid it.
Dec-10-04  InspiredByMorphy: <Knight13> This is called the Fried Liver attack. They call it this for a reason. It leaves blacks goose cooked! A prolonging of the misery (one of which Ive looked painfully into to find something for black to find nothing) could have been 7. ...Ke6 8.Nc6 Ncb4 9.a3 Nxc2+ 10.Kd1 and black is helpless. 5. ...Nxd5? is an invitation to disaster.
Dec-10-04  acirce: <InspiredByMorphy> I don't think so. How is Black helpless? I'll bite - 10..Nxa1.

6.d4 is actually considered better after 5..Nxd5?! but this is very much a matter of taste.

Dec-11-04  InspiredByMorphy: <acirce> Thanks your right. 10. ...Nxa1 11. d4 c6 12. Re1 Kd7 13. Nxd5 cxd5 14. Qxd5+ Kc7 15. Qxe5+ Qd6 and black is winning.
Dec-11-04  InspiredByMorphy: H Steiner vs NN, 1945 is an example in this line where black misses a vital move.
Feb-12-05  KKW: 7...Kg8 is the worst possible move that could be played in that position
Apr-15-05  aw1988: If white is trying the Fried Liver, I think 6. d4! is a vast improvement.
Nov-26-05  Chopin: QF3+, then the king should have moved to e6. Black will eventually lose, even after Ke6.
Nov-26-05  aw1988: Actually, Black can hold, albeit with an inferior position.
Nov-26-05  Chopin: <aw 1988> I agree that Black can hold, but I've read that with best play White will win.
Nov-26-05  aw1988: Where did you read it?
Nov-26-05  Chopin: Hello <aw 1988>: Sorry but I can't quote the source; it was on the internet. Regardless, we can both agree that black has an inferior position. Take care.

Nov-26-05  aw1988: *shrug*, I'm not willing to play the Black side of it. You too.
Nov-26-05  aw1988: Frankly it seems stupid to debate an opening Black has no chance of winning.
Jul-06-09  WhiteRook48: 7...Kg8

OK, let's see what you guys think of this, a game I won recently on chess.com:

[Event "Fast Players Group vs Wolf Team - Board 5"]
[Site "Chess.com"]
[Date "2009.12.13"]
[White "Infohunter"]
[Black "clozmie"]
[Result "1-0"]
[WhiteElo "1900"]
[BlackElo "1516"]
[TimeControl "1 in 1 day"]
[Termination "Infohunter won by checkmate"]

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5 Nxd5 6.Nxf7 Kxf7 7.Qf3+ Ke6 8.Nc3 Ncb4 9.a3 Nxc2+ 10.Kd1 Nxa1 11.Nxd5 Kd6 12.d4 c6 13.dxe5+ Ke6 14.Qg4+ Kxe5 15.Re1+ Kd6 16.Qf4+ Kd7 17.Qf5+ Kd6 18.Qe5+ Kc5 19.Be3+ Kxc4 20.Qd4+ Kb5 21.Qd3+ Ka5 22.Bd2+ Bb4 23.Bxb4+ Ka4 24.b3+ Nxb3 25.Nc3# 1-0

Granted, it wasn't easy after 10...Nxa1; fact is, though, I've yet to fail to win against 5...Nxd5, ALWAYS choosing the Fried Liver Attack. At White's twelfth, 12. d4 works better than 12. Re1--at least, that's my experience.

Sep-04-11  TheRavenPK: <Infohunter> Nice win. I tried to check the other moves possible by black since 13..Ke6, but I think all lead to mate. Thanks for showing this game.
Sep-21-12  Abdel Irada: Hard to imagine why Black would play on after 8. ♗xd5†, but I suppose one has to allow for the vagaries of youth.
Dec-05-18  Nightsurfer: One might hardly believe one's eyes: There has happened a crazy parallel case ... of the final position of checkmate in this game here <Rodrigo Maidana vs Pierino Goette (2001)> after <10.Qxe6#>, please have a look at that very constellation ...

with the final position of checkmate (with colours reversed) that has been executed two years later at the end of the game R Schnelle vs R Gralla, 2003 , please have a look at the constellation of Black's deadly punch with <12. ... Qe3#> ...

... a kind of virtual bridge that has linked two events through time and space! Stunning!

Apr-28-20  sea7kenp: To those who think the Fried Liver is a forced loss for Black, set it up as White and then play a Strong Computer (i.e. Stockfish). Obviously, Black must play 7 ... Ke6, however.
