Oct-13-09  YouRang: A good chess player would play <13...h6> to attack the knight at g5, because that knight can't move (it's the only thing preventing the queen-winning fork, ...Nf3+).

A great chess player looks deeper and sees the consequences of taking the knight, opening the rook file with mating possibilities if g3 is weakened.

The difference between the two is worth a spectacular queen-sac mating combination. :-)

Oct-13-09  NARC: I have to remember this gambit.
Oct-13-09  Capthahn86: Are you kidding me? A much better pun would have been "Mazel Tov!"

playground player: If I were White, I would've thought I was winning.
Oct-13-09  lzromeu: Forced mate.
The 15th move could be a great puzzle
Oct-13-09  WhiteRook48: the real White probably did think he was winning

FSR: Cool game! I don't recall ever seeing it before, and the mating combination is very unusual. Gotta love that arrangement of pawns on the g-file, too.
Oct-13-09  SamAtoms1980: Hmmm.... "gg" indeed, but it should be more like "ggggg", shouldn't it?

Now I'm going to have to find a game where a King gets driven into the heart of the opposing camp, and submit it with "OMGLOLBBQ".

This seriously made me laugh out loud... or should I say lol in this case xD?

Very weird game, weird sac, weird ending position. Good GOTD :).

fm avari viraf: Of course, White didn't handle the opening so well & ultimately landed himself in miserable state. Black playing imaginatively won with a pretty combination pleasing to all the afficionados.
Oct-24-09  japz12: hey guys! will somebody please explain to me why not Nxf7? I think that will be a better line for white. any genius analysis?
Oct-24-09  pawn to QB4: Hi japz - I must confess to having played this line once, casual game and alcohol was involved, if that's any excuse. My opponent did play 5.Nxf7. I grovelled out of it with 5...Qf6 with the crude threat of mate; he castled; then 6...Nd6 and rather than play 7.Nxh8 Nxc4 and I should eventually win that knight on h8, he played 7.Nxd6+ Bxd6 and I was doing surprisingly well.
Oct-24-09  AnalyzeThis: After 5. Nxf7 the best move for black is Qh4 with advantage to black. If 6. g3 then Nxg3 7. fxg3 Qe4+ 8. Qe2 Qxh1+. White does better with 6. 0-0 but then either 6....Bc5 or 6....Nxf2 are promising for black.
Oct-24-09  japz12: thanks guys. i think i might need to look at it again. <AnalyzeThis> ur analyisis is good!

  GrahamClayton: <TheAussiePatzer>Cool final position

TheAussiePatzer,
I agree - 5 pawns on one file is unusual. Are there any games in the database with 6 pawns on one file?

Mar-26-10  whiteshark: Not really an IPC. <gg>

Here's the picturesque final position with the 5g-pawns.

Jul-23-11  fionas88888: The pun should be ggggg for there are 5 g-pawns. And there is also Gelfand vs Grischuk, 2002 that has the same pun. I don't know why there are 2 games with same puns. >:|
Nov-12-12  vinidivici: 14.Bc5 deserves a POTD! Maybe wednesday or Thursday
