..the advantage move 39.Bxa6! the a-pawn marches to kingdom come!

Apr-27-16  Sergash: Gabriela Hitzgerova is a Woman International Master. She is born in 1979 was was 21 or 22 years old at the time of the game, with a rating of 2255; Carlsen was 10 years old and rated 2064. Early 2016, her rating is 2144.

Hitsgerova introduced a new move to the theory with <11.a4N>. The theory knew 11.d5 Nb8 12.c4 Nbd7 13.Nc3 = Joachim Franz vs Wolf Dannberg, 5th East German Championship 1954 in Meerane, round 6, 1-0.

I checked this game with the program Stockfish 7 - 64 bits POPCNT.

<12...Bf8?!> Missed 12...exd4! 13.axb5 (or 13.Nxd4 c5! 14.Nf5! b4 =) axb5 14.Nxd4 (or 14.cxd4 Nb3 15.Rxa8 Nxc1 16.Rxc1 Bxa8 =) Nc6 15.Rxa8 Nxd4! 16.cxd4 Qxa8 =

<14.Bg5?! Nc4 > Better is 14.axb5 axb5 15.Qxb5 c6 16.Qd3 /

<15.b3 Nd6 = > White could possibly secure a small advantage with 15.axb5 axb5 16.Nbd2 Nd6

<21.Bxf6?! Qxf6 > 21.Ndf1! = and the knight can reach e3-d5 etc. without giving up the pair of bishops. Now Carlsen gets a small edge.

<23...Bc5?! 24.Nd5 = > 23.f6!

<29...Red8?! 30.Nf5 > 29...Kh8 =

<31...Kh8?> Not a good move anymore! During this period of his carreer, Carlsen had a tendency to commit mistakes between the movee 28 and 40, possibly because he was short on time and had to speed up his play to reach the time control... 31...Bxd5! 32.cxd5 Qd7 33.Bd3 /

<32.Nh6? Qxg4 (only move)> 32.Qh4! g5 33.Qh5

After <32...Qxg4 33.Nxg4?!> instead of the automatic recapture of the queen, there was the very nice 33.Nxf7+! Kg7 34.Nxd8! Qxd1+ (only move as 34...Qd7?? would lose to 35.Nb6! ) 35.Rxd1 Rxd8 36.Nxc7 Rxd1+ 37.Bxd1 Bxf2 = with a possible draw in view!

<33...Bxd5?! 34.cxd5 = > Carlsen would have had the better position after 33...h5! 34.Nge3 (or 34.Nh2 Kg7! ) Rd6! 35.h4!

<35...Rd6 36.Rc2 > This move cuts the bishop on c5, which cannot come back on d6 to support c7. 35...Bd4! / =

<37...Bc3?! 38.Ne3! > 37...h5! 38.Nh2 (or 38.Ne3 c5! ) c5

<38...c6?! 39.Bxa6 (as mentioned by wordfunph!)> Carlsen was on the edge of a cliff now. Hope was in 38...f5! 39.Nd1! fxe4 (or 39...Bd4 40.Rxc7! Rxc7! 41.Rxc7 fxe4! 42.Bxe4 Kf8 ) 40.Bxe4 Bd4! 41.Rxc7 Rcd8

<39...Rc7?!> Lost position, but still better was 39...Rb8 40.dxc6! Rxc6 41.Bd3!

<40.Bc4?> Time pressure? This move lets Carlsen slip away... or at least gave him a chance to do so! 40.dxc6!

<40...cxd5? 41.Nxd5 > Carlsen let his chance go away... 40...Ng5! 41.f3 Bd4 42.Re1 c5

<42...Rdc6? 43.Ra2 and it is all over> 42...Rxc4 43.bxc4 Rxa6 would allow to play a few more moves, but this was hopeless still...

After this game, Carlsen had a score of 0.5 out of 5 games... All players were masters, international masters etc. A very tough tournament for a 10 year old kid with no title and no experience...
