May-23-12  CHESSTTCAMPS: An ending every chessplayer should be be familiar with - white can force mate with the smallest amount of material possible (not including pawns that can promote). Here, the winning sequence is 83.Nd3 Ka1 84.Nc1 a2 85.Nb3# Similarly, white wins with the N on any dark square that is two knight moves from c1. White also wins with the knight on any light square that can reach b4: 83.Nb4+ Ka1 84.Kc1 a2 85.Nc2#.
May-23-12  mistreaver: After not writing any comments for Monday and Tuesday, because those puzzles really were easy and i got them almost immediatelly, i am back. This is nice endgame trick i have already seen somewhere before. The point is to place the back king into korner and then give mate on b3 or c2. It would go like:
83 Kf1 Kh1
84 Ne4 Kh2
85 Nd2 Kh1
86 Kc2 h2
87 Ng3 mate
May-23-12  mistreaver: Argh, i missed the stalemate. It doesn't pay to be overconfident.
May-23-12  gars: What is wrong with 83)Nb3 proposed by <dumbgai>?

paulalbert: Easy but instructive. Get the N to c1 at the right time to create Zugzwang ( Black K can't go back to a2 forcing Pa2 suicide )
May-23-12  LoveThatJoker: <JohnBoy> I treated myself to a purely subjective appraisal of the solution I came up with - as IMHO it is brilliant and exciting to find the correct circuit for the N, all the moves are forced, and lastly, for variety's sake! :)

<gars> 83. Nb3 is Stalemate.

May-23-12  jackpawn: Found almost immediately. First looked at 83. Nb3. That's stalemate. Okay, is there something more? Let's try 83. Nd3. From there it's all forced, leading to mate.

gawain: Oh my! That's brilliant. Famous though it may be, I have never seen this position before.

I jumped to the wrong conclusion. Obviously White secures a draw by 83 Nb3. It did not occur to me that White could hope to win.

White to move wins.

Jimfromprovidence: I'm interested in the position after 75...Nxf6?

This is the losing move as the tablebases tell us.

So, is 75...Kf7 any better?

The only way black can save this game is to win the f pawn and trade off the knights. I do not believe white can ever gain the opposition if it's just the two kings and white's a pawn left, so black has to try 75...Kf7 here.

May-23-12  kevin86: I easily saw the win for black since the knight alone couldn't win and the pawn could BUT NO!!!!!

It was white who would win and in three moves!

83 ♘d3 ♔a1 84 ♘c1 a2 85 ♘b3#

The magic of chess!

May-23-12  TomOhio: I played the right first two moves thinking "just get the draw." Then, bing!
May-23-12  BOSTER: Looking from his cage, where there is no any window to escape, black king should ask himself the question: who is responsible for such events?

Maybe he was in hurry to move his pawn on a3, or maybe it was his own mistake when he took a2 pawn.

What is interesting here, that the "c5" square is not the only one for knight to satisfy this puzzle: e5,f4,f2,e1, and even b2 are good too. So,"c5" should not be so proud.

May-23-12  SuperPatzer77: <ChessTTCamps> You gave us the truly amazing analysis of this game.

See a very interesting diagram below:

See two different lines (a & b) below:

a) Black to play (actual game) and lose - below:

83...♔a1, 84. ♘c1! a2 ▢, 85. ♘b3#

b) White to play and win (if it is White's move)

1. ♘b4+ ♔a1, 2. ♔c1! a2 ▢, 3. ♘c2#

<Kevin86> Yep, it is magic of the endgame!!

SuperPatzer77

May-23-12  lionel15: I never realized, this ending was from a real game. To me it was just a chess problem
May-23-12  chicagotim: Whats preventing stalemate if black plays 83...a4?
May-23-12  EXIDE: Difficult !! Not a Tuesday puzzle. Got it after playing it out on a board and several wrong moves that lead to draws.
May-23-12  dzechiel: White to move (83?). White has a knight for a pawn. "Medium/Easy."

Most of the time when you see a position like this, your first thought is, "This is drawn."

But a careful look at the position reveals that black can easily be put in zugzwang, allowing white to administer checkmate. Here goes...

83 Nd3 Ka1

Black has no other legal move.

84 Nc1 a2

Black, in zugzwang, must take his turn.

85 Nb3#

Now I gotta see how this position came to be. Time to check.

May-23-12  dzechiel: <chicagotim: Whats preventing stalemate if black plays 83...a4?>

Black pawns move down the board.

May-23-12  BOSTER: <dzechiel> <Most of the time when you see a position like this , your first thought is ,"This is a drawn".

Not for <CG Puzzle>.

They are not so naive to give such <POTD>.

May-23-12  timothee3331: <Honza> It's a beautiful problem, from Trotski if I'm not mistaken.

It goes 1.Bd5+ Ng2 2.Ba8! h3 3.Kb7! and the kings just marches the stairs down !

May-23-12  timothee3331: And once you have your king on f2, Ng3 mate !
May-23-12  Patriot: A very interesting problem! It took me several minutes to come up with 83.Nd3 Ka1 84.Nc1 a2 85.Nb3#

This wouldn't be easy for me with only seconds left during a game.

May-23-12  asiduodiego: Nice and instructive!. 83 Nd3 Ka1 84 Nc1!! and it's mate after 84 ... a2 85 Nb3#. The key in this position is using the Knight to cover a2, forcing the fatal advance of the pawn.
