Dec-25-10  jeremyh20man: What is black's compensation after 17...Nxb2? The knight can't be trapped and I don't see a way for white to exploit the Knight being alone in white territory on the qside.

sleepyirv: You're looking at the wrong knight!

18.Qf3 and the f6 knight will fall sooner or later.

Sastre: If 17...Nxb2, 18.Qf3 followed by 19.Rf1 is good for White.
Dec-01-13  zydeco: 12....Nh7 seems bizarre. 12....b5 looks almost automatic to begin counterplay. Tal's technique is awesome in this game -- coasting into an endgame where he has an exchange for three pawns, which turns out to be absolutely winning.
Nov-21-15  Mehem: Wow! Tal missed the crushing sac.

32.Bxg6! and White is a rook up.

Aug-28-16  Tal1949: Yes, he did make life harder for himself by checking with the knight. Still, he was always in control. The game was already over by move 27-29.

plang: 11..h5 had been introduced by Gligoric a year earlier against Sherwin and is now considered the best move. Gligoric:"Taught by experience, I grasped that White's early pawn advance, when his kingside was still undeveloped, could be punished by Black only by emphasizing the the ensuing weakness of the dark squares, and that could be achieved, after 10 g4..Nbd7 11 h4 by 11..h5!."

13 h4? was an inaccuracy (13 0-0-0 and 13 Rg1 are better) that Gligoric could have punished with 14..Nb6 threatening ..Bxg4 and ..Nc4; Missing that Tal quickly obtained a strong initiative. As mentioned above 32 Bxg6! would have been immediately decisive: ie. 32..fxg 33 Rxg6+..Kf7 34 Rf6+..Ke7 35 Rh7+..Kd8 36 Nxf8 with mate to follow. White would have mated after 36..gxh 37 Qc8+..Kh7 38 Qf5+..Kg7 39 Rg1+..Kf8 40 Qc8+..Ke7 41 Qc7+..Kf8 42 Qd8#. Sacrificing the b-pawn was not necessary; 44 Kg5 would have been equally decisive.

Apr-20-17  Toribio3: Great calculation by Tal. The hostile king has no place to go!

SteinitzLives: After black's inaccuracies around moves 13 and 14 (which seem a shame due to Gligo's familiarity w/ this variation) Tal gets his kind of game.

One can sense black's discomfort with 19 . . . Bxg4 leading to multiple exchanges where his 3 pawns which can't be used for anything, are no comp for Tal`s extra piece.

Give black credit for fighting to get his R`s active but to no avail.

It strikes me as funny that it's Gligo's king that is vulnerable not Tal`s around move 32. Though white missed the sac mentioned earlier that leads to a quicker win, Tapl can be forgiven as his play seems more than enough to win.

Blacks mad lunge w/ 42 . . . f5, shows Gligo's fighting spirit in vain. A very entertaining game!
