Sep-08-02  bishop: The followig note is from Eduard Gufeld's "The Art of the King's Indian"- "15...Nf4!! A textbook example of a purely positional piece sacrifice. The price of the knight is high: the white king is deprived of it's pawn cover and the black pieces spring to life."
May-28-17  zydeco: Gufeld is an easy player to underestimate, because he was such a relentless self-promoter/toxic personality, but he could certainly mix it up with the best. Nice game.

Sally Simpson: Be aware that in Gufeld's books 'The Search For Mona Lisa' (smashing book BTW) on page 90 the move given there (Black to play)

click for larger view

is 35...Qf4 and the same move pops ups in some databases. Going over the game I spotted that Black then gets mated with 36.Rxg2+

I mentioned this missed mate as part of an article I wrote not long after the book came out with me slipping into cool Joe mode by saying sometimes good players miss things in the heat of battle etc and etc and coming across all smooth and knowledgeable.

A few weeks later I received an email from Amatzia Anni (unashamedly name dropping is all part of the cool Joe persona) Amatzia confirmed that 35...Qf4 was indeed repeated in databases but added in Gufeld's "The Art of the King's Indian" the correct move 35...Rf4 is given and 35...Qf4 is a misprint.

In a later article, still feeling quite chuffed I spotted the mate right away, I drew attention to the misprint and in doing so I merrily succeeded in referring to Gufeld as Gulko all the way through the article including the title of the piece. That is because I am not cool Joe but a fanny.

A happy fanny, but a fanny none the less.

Feb-22-24  Retireborn: Geoff, I read that book too. I laughed at Botvinnik's description of Gufeld - I believe the word was "yobbo" or something similar.

  Sally Simpson: His Retireborn,

Was it not something like Gufeld saw Botvinnik talking about him during a training session for the coming Olympiad and when he asked what Botvinnik had said he told;

"Who is this slob?"

There is also the tale about Gufeld and Botvinnik at the Olympiad. The first thing Gufeld did was to go to a tourist shop and bought a watch and other items and put them in the goody bag all players are given at the start of the event.

He sat next to Botvinnik and and started pulling out all these expensive looking trinkets. He relates Botvinnik was ripping his goody bag to pieces looking for the same freebies.

Feb-22-24  Retireborn: Geoff, yes it may have been "slob". Not sure of the event but Botvinnik and Gufeld were on the same team. Presumably dear old Botty had never clapped eyes on the bloke before!

"Dear old Botty" is my invention, as far as I know.

  Sally Simpson: Hi Retireborn,

You were right, In 'Mona Lisa' game 25 Gufeld said Botvinnik called him a 'Yobbo' in this this link Smyslov vs Gufeld, 1967 (kibitz #1) Benzol has 'punk' I suspect he picked up the tale from another source by Gufeld and yobbo, punk, slob, has been changed over the years with the re-telling.

---

Dear Old Botty....all I can say is 'oh dear.'
