Jul-05-02  morphynoman: Wonderful especulative tactical sacrifices by Tal. A game to enjoy many times.
Mar-09-03  ughaibu: It's amazing that Tal managed to play game after game in this style against very strong opponents.
Mar-09-03  Spitecheck: Just show's you that Tal is guided by instinct, judgment and an open mind as much as by any concrete combinative prowess that he possessed at the hight of his powers.

Spite

Oct-18-03  MAGICIAN: this is the way chess should be play, tal always played for his many fans.
Feb-08-04  tomh72000: 12.Nxf7
Great intuitive sacrifice, characteristic of Tal.
15. Rb1!!!
This is vintage Tal!
Jul-16-04  Jesuitic Calvinist: Yes, wonderful - an old favourite, this one.
Aug-05-04  Tal ty forthememores: Believe it or not I actually recall Mikhail telling me about this game. It was about the atracting 12.nxf7 that started it all.

It was at this point that Tal bursted out in laughter while were reviewing the game one late night. I was wondering if he had gone mad! He then stood up and told me how "routine this move had now become" By that I was confused. I never asked him what he meant, and I regret never doing so, but todayI realize what he meant.

<Spitecheck> put it in good form:

<Just show's you that Tal is guided by instinct, judgment and an open mind as much as by any concrete combinative prowess that he possessed at the hight of his powers.>

<15.Rb1!!>
I remember him explaining this move, and I really had no clue how to follow what he was saying!

Intrestingly enough, this is the game I remeber him most talking of to me.

Aug-06-04  Lawrence: It takes a while, but <Junior 8> actually does find 12.Nxf7 as the strongest move, eval +1.68. 12.f5 is also good, +1.22.
Aug-06-04  themindset: why is this listed as a Robatsch?
Aug-06-04  Zenchess: 12. Nxf7 shouldn't be that hard to find; sometimes with the pawn goes to h6 to kick the Knight, the Knight kicks back (f7). ...h6 weakens g6 and the Knight removes the last defender from that square. It is as natural a sac as ...Rxc3 in the Dragon Yugoslav or Nxb5 in some Najdorf positions or f5 in some Classical French positions.

Regarding 15. Rb1, I heard one time that although normally R and two minor pieces are worth more than a Q, Tal's Q was worth more than other Q's!

Aug-07-04  ughaibu: Zenchess: it's not a problem of finding it as much as one of playing it.
Aug-07-04  Zenchess: All Tal had to see was the King being flushed out to e6 on move 14. It shouldn't take an hour's thought to decide on such a sac.
Aug-07-04  acirce: I agree with that. Nothing very extraordinary about this sac. Of course depending on general playing style, mood, etc .. you may not play it but it takes no Tal.
Sep-10-04  Giancarlo: <12.nxf7>

Easy to see, hard to play! Spielmann calls this a 'real' sacrifice as opposed to those sacrifical combinations where the hoped-for gain is clear and short term.

So many Tal brilliances, but this early (flawed) example is one of my favourites.

Sep-10-04  clocked: <Giancarlo> what flaw is that?
Jan-23-05  northernsoul: how is this a Robatsch?

There is also a link to this game ... annotated reasonably well.

Feb-21-05  aw1988: After 20...Kd6 at the time when this game was played I thought for sure Tal was going to lose. He has the queen, sure, but look at all the other pieces! I was proven wrong apparently...
Feb-21-05  lopium: ahahaah!! I really like tis game! ahaha, what a crazy one! Too many sacrifices, he is very funny. (Tal)

Feb-27-05  Saruman: Of course not 28.-Bf6? 29.Qf5+ Kf7 30.Qxe5 .
Mar-07-05  Saruman: <AJ> I think you are to some degree violating posting guideline #1 and #3 here. Leave <lopium> alone!
