tamar: Effortless victory by Pillsbury. Schwarz gets tied in knots trying to defend f7 and h6.

16 Bxf7 Rxf7 17 Rxd6 appears to work as well as the game continuation.

Jun-08-06  capanegra: <tamar> If 16.Bxf7 I would reply 16…Bxh2+ 17.Nxh2 Rxf7. However, anything seems to work besides the game continuation. Black's position is too horrible.

tamar: <capanegra> I agree. Black stashes his rook on d7 like an old sofa, thinking to barricade the position.

This wasn't Adolf Schwarz though, probably an amateur.

Jun-08-06  hitman84: This is a classic scenario of underdevelopment.

The normal looking 8...Bd6 is a mistake.
Better was Be7.

After move 11.
Check the piece balance..
Three pieces of white are targetting the King which is defended only by the R on f8(illusional defensive piece)

White plays on the surprising misplaced d6 B also developing pieces targetting the King.

Here is a rule that should be followed before developing a piece. Does the piece developed to a square overload its own pieces ?

Here the B loads the Q thereby hampers development.

Pawn and Two: <tamar> Black in this game was Adolf Schwarz. This game was played in the 1898 Vienna tournament. Schwarz withdrew from the tournament after the 8th round.

I'll send the correction to chessgames.

igiene: 4..Nf6 is'nt good. Black must play before 4..Nbd7 and if 5.Bd3, only now 5..Nxe4! After 6.Bxe4 Nf6! gains a vital tempo for development of Kingside

Hmm, I do think this is Adolf Schwarz, whose game vs Pillsbury would else be missing from Vienna (1898). Other opinions?

perfidious: <Tabanus> Looks like Adolf Schwarz to me: http://www.365chess.com/tournaments...

I'll leave the correction to you, if you wish.

Tabanus: <perfidious> Slip sent already, and so also for the wrong Baird brother in Vienna 1898.

7 more years to wait? :)

perfidious: <Tabanus> Things on the correction front have vastly improved overall; in some cases, I have had to repeat slips, but that's nothing compared to the way things used to be. It was discouraging enough that I did not bother for a long, long while.

Good thing this game was short so Pillsbury could spend more time with the ladies.
