Kibitzer's Corner
May-06-06  Chess Classics: Good fight by Smyslov, I didn't realize he was active this long.

Regards,
CC

May-06-06  Jim Bartle: He'd reached the candidates final only a year earlier.
May-06-06  Chess Classics: <Jim Bartle> Just read his bio, you're right. Maybe back in '85 they could have arranged a Najdorf-Smyslov match? :-)

Regards,
CC

May-06-06  Maynard5: Black's decisive mistake here appears to be 35. ... g6. Instead, 35. ... Qe7 appears to hold, although after 36. Bc4 Black must still play defensively. Smyslov's problem here is that the dark square bishop is effectively locked out, while Miles' light square bishop is more active.
Jan-10-10  waddayaplay: well there was a good chance later

47. ..h3+ leads to a draw:

White must play 48.♔g1 ( 48. ♔f3 ♖c3+ 49.♔e2 h2 50.♖f1 ♔g4 and white must sac the rook for the pawn ) and now ♖c3, ♔h2 ♔g4, ♗f7 ♖xg3, ♗xe6+ ♔h4 :

when white can't make progress (e.g. ♖f8 ♖g2+, ♔h1 ♔g3)

Jan-10-10  waddayaplay: <Maynard5> I agree that 35. ..Qe7 is better. But I would prefer black after that. The bishop can move to c3-d4.

  sackman: In his annotations Miles puts a question mark at 41 Rc2 and annotates 41 c4; 42 Rc7 Rc1; 43 Rc4 =.

He also annotates 47 ...Rc3?? and points out 47 ... h3 = as recommended by waddayaplay
