Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-18-04  sourcerer: forever the best end game attack i've seen .kotov delight
Mar-03-05  hjsukthankar: Where's the win?
Mar-03-05  Doctor Who: It's very easy to win this position. Just one example line to illustrate how hopeless it is for Black: 90...♗d2 91.♖c6+ ♔xh5? 92.♖c2 ♗e1 93.♖h2+ ♗h4 94. ♖h1
Mar-04-05  PizzatheHut: Wow, I'm impressed. It's not too often that Smyslov gets outplayed in an endgame.
Mar-04-05  aw1988: Smyslov was also relatively unknown in 1945.
Mar-04-05  euripides: Looking in Mueller and Lamprecht, I think the technique here is to sacrifice the pawn and bring about a position where Black's king is trapped in the h8 corner. Because he has a black-squared bishop, the position is then lost for him. So 90 Rc3 Bd2 91 Rc6+ Kh7 92 h6 Bxh6 93 Rc7+ Bg7 94 Kg5 Kg8 95 Kg6 Bf8 96 Rc8 wins. But if this is right, I wonder why Kotov did not use this technique earlier e.g. on move 82, and why Smylsov resigned when he did. Perhaps they reached an adjournment and Smyslov reckoned Kotov could look it up in a book.

With a white-squared bishop, I think (from Mueller and Lamprecht) this would be drawn because the winning technique above doesn't work and alternatives techniques don't work because the h pawn is too far advanced.

Sep-08-09  King.Arthur.Brazil: Smyslov variant begins with Bxf3, and followed by Ne5. But c6? could be replaced by 11...c5! If 12.dxc6 Nxc6 or bxc6 and black has attack. With 12.f4 Neg4? is nonsense (lost the N) and Nd7 was weak, black lose material. Not to change the R, black leave the d and c column, as it seems Kotov invades the 7th rank, Smyslov turn back and change the R on d5, and get a losen final. Kotov work hard to convencing him to abandon.
Dec-25-15  joddon: kotov realises symslov is unready...smashes him up before he has time to regenerate any energy or power..... a free rook on a total open board is every masters dream moves....gives me power while i play too.....the bishop have no fate against the prowness of the power in the rook.....white has to play this opening when his opponent is too daring and ready....kotov always looked ready!!
