Feb-02-12  Knight13: You stop at move 21, and you'd wonder how White can lose such a game. After seeing over half of the match games between these two players, I can tell that McDonnell would mess up sometimes on purpose when he's losing to bluff his opponent. Either that or he's just really bad at handling worse positions that calls for patience and accurate analysis.
Feb-02-12  Mozart72: Knight13, where do you think the opening ends and the middle and end-game start?
Feb-02-12  Knight13: <Mozart72: Knight13, where do you think the opening ends and the middle and end-game start?> Where the opening ends is often uncertain. If we represent the opening as the color white, and middle game as the color red, we would often come to a stage where the color is pink. If white is on the left, and red on the right, then the color pink is a river that must be crossed. It's similar to the Triple Point in chemistry where solid, liquid, and gas all coexist. Some opening theory goes over twenty moves!

For where the middle game ends and endgame starts, that can be realized when the importance of pawns (in large for promotion) and the power of the kings become evident. But, again, there is often a "pink river" in the middle as well like in the transition between opening and endgame.

Does that help?

Feb-02-12  Mozart72: Knight13, yes thank you very much.
Feb-02-12  Knight13: <Mozart72> You are welcome.
Nov-19-14  Ke2: 15... Bh3!!
Dec-02-22  tastywalrus02: yes 15... Bh3!! would have been a brilliant move only guys like Alekhine, Tal and maybe Topalov can find it
Dec-02-22  tastywalrus02: This is clearly fatal. Almost all the commentators recommended here 24.Qxc5, but in that case Black might have obtained an almost winning attack by 24...g4, etc. The correct course was to play 24.Kf2, after which, White, with ordinary care ought to have won without much trouble.

damn Morphy was accurate
