Jul-14-06  Whitehat1963: Someone please explain why this is over. How about it, Crafty, what do you think?
Jul-14-06  RookFile: I was really intrigued by Morphy's opening play. Actually, the game bears a resemblence to The Immortal Game. (Anderssen).

Modern annotators were critical of Kiersertsky's play with black - play that so closely resembles Morphy's here. But then Robert Huebner annotated this, and showed that with proper play, black's opening is just fine.

The best move of the game, in my opinion, is Morphy's 17.... Kh8!! Many of us might have played something like 17... Nf4. But Morphy sees that the f file will get opened with murderous pressure. 17... Kh8 is a winning move, white cannot defend after this.

After 20....Nf6+, white resigned, because black is a full piece ahead.

Play might have continued 21. Kh3 axb6 22. Re1 Ne5 23. d3 bxc3 24. bxc3 Ra5, and you start to wonder how long white's king is going to survive after ...g4+ and the idea of some point swinging the a5 rook over to say hello.

Phony Benoni: Basically, it's over because the players agreed it was over.

I imagine that Black's extra piece coupled with White's poor development may have influenced the decision. Note that White can't even win a pawn with 21.Kxg5 because Black can reply 21...Nxe4+ before recapturing the queen.

Jul-14-06  fgh: White moves and black takes the white queen on the next move, remaining a piece up.
Oct-30-07  RookFile: You wonder why Stanley didn't play Bishop's opening here ( 1. e4 e5 2. Bc4 ) which he had used successfully in his prime.
Dec-28-07  nimh: Rybka 2.3.1 mp, AMD X2 2.01GHz, 10 min per move, threshold 0.33.

Stanley 7 mistakes:
7.Nc3 -0.14 (7.Ne5 0.21)
9.Bc4 -0.84 (9.Qe2 -0.10)
11.Ke2 -0.82 (11.Rg1 -0.24)
12.Ne5 -1.17 (12.d4 -0.64)
15.Qe2 -1.20 (15.Be2 -0.34)
16.Bc4 -2.65 (16.Ne3 -1.20)
17.c3 -3.57 (17.Qd1 -2.22)

Morphy 2 mistakes:
10...Nh5 -0.24 (10...c6 -0.84)
13...f3+ -0.38 (13...Qb6 -1.12)

Dec-28-07  InspiredByMorphy: The game without the losing blunder could have continued 19.exf5 Rxf5+ 20.Ke2 Nf4+ 21.Kd1 Nxg2 22.Qe4
