Aug-17-04 | | InspiredByMorphy: Great play by Gunsberg. NN doesent even play bad, Gunsberg just plays better giving up the exchange and then playing 18.Qxd7! and 19.Rxf6! |
Dec-30-04 | | Knight13: Well played by Gunsberg. NN didn't played bad, he just didn't realize how dangerous his King was. Gunsberg castled into a dangerous position because there are no pawns. Great sacrifices. |
Apr-28-05 | | PaulLovric: being the poor player that i am i love the king's gambit |
Sep-26-05 | | error: I just noted this is probably the longest mate I've ever seen given by a bishop. Of course it can be even longer it the bishop was at the square "a1". Anybody knows such a case? |
Mar-17-06 | | AlexanderMorphy: longest mate by a bishop...never heard of that! great game by one of the greatest players of that era! |
Jun-22-06 | | capanegra: What if Black plays 19...Kg7? Avoids mate, and the result is not so clear at first sight. |
Jun-22-06 | | capanegra: 19...Kg7 20.Rd6+ Kh6 21.Rxd7 cxd5 22.Nxd5 Rf2 is all I can see. After all, White has a better ending. |
Nov-02-06
 | | Phony Benoni: Not quite mate, but Alekhine called 40...f2+ the longest check he had ever given: Menchik vs Alekhine, 1932 |
Jan-04-07 | | McCool: Actually, Gunsberg is playing his machine Mephisto. A modern reply to the Cunningham Gambit is 4...Nf6! which is vastly superior. Also, instead of 12...0-0; Possibly 12...g5 might be tried here, and if 13.Nf5 c6 etc. A remarkably interesting game. Black's inaccurate defensive play cost him the game. |
Mar-06-18 | | morfishine: I guess NN got tired of being smothered mated by Greco, so he figured an innocent game with Gunsberg may retrieve some of his long lost confidence, but he was rudely surprised to find himself imitating a punching bag under the relentless pounding by Isidor Poor NN

 | | FSR: Belatedly noticed that CG used my pun, just four days after I submitted it! |
May-13-23
 | | perfidious: 'Guns Blazing', yet I never saw this game and there are only three kibitzes from that day. <FSR>, four days' turnaround must be some sort of rekkid for one of yours. |
May-13-23
 | | FSR: <perfidious> My pun was used the next day in the case of <First Blood> (Carlsen vs Karjakin, 2016) and, oddly, <Elephant Hunt> (H Hunt vs J W Rogers, 2008). <The Old Man and the C> (Carlsen vs Karjakin, 2016) and <Opening the Ludgates> (Pachman vs A Ludgate, 1976) were both four days later, like this game. |
