Nov-19-05  paladin at large: This looks like one you could analyze for a long time. Is 16. g4 the source of Charousek's troubles? Maroczy sure sets up a strong pin with his bishop on b7.

Would 35. Rg1 or 44. h5 have been better for White?

tamar: 30 Ng2 looks like an error. 30 Nxf5! leads to some ticklish situations.

After 30 Nxf5

30...Qxf5? 31 Qb2+ wins

30...Rae8 31 Rae1 Rxg1+ 32 Rxg1 Rxe6
33 Qg2 Qf7 34 Rd1 and while Black still has the pin on f3, there appears little he can do against White's slow preparations for Nh4 and f5 gaining the initiative.

Nov-20-05  Petrocephalon: Did you analyze 30..c3?
Nov-20-05  Petrocephalon: Oh, then just Nd6.

  tamar: Right. 30 Nxf5 b4 31 Nd6 also. A missed opportunity.

This was played in a 14 game match between the 24 year old Maroczy and the 21 year old Charousek.

Maroczy won with 9 of 14.

Apr-10-06  EmperorAtahualpa: Whoa, complicated middlegame there! It took me a while before I realized that 23.bxc4 really is bad for Black because Black's response would be 23...dxc4 followed with 24...Nxd4 which wins the queen because the knight at f3 is pinned!
