Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-15-06  talisman: pretty sharp draw...21...Rd8-f8?

plang: This was game 16. Botvinnik had played 6 Nh3 in game 14. Taimanov evaluated the position after 12 Be2 as approximately equal. Tal felt that with 21..Rd7 he would have been at least equal. After 21..Rf8? White's pieces infiltrated and developed menacing threats. Still, Tal obtained kingside counterplay and had he played 33..Qg5 he felt that he would have had good chances. instead, after 33..Nd3? 34 Nf5 he realized that he had to retreat as his intended 34..Qg5 35 h4..Qf4?? overlooks the mate on g7. He was able to achieve the draw anyway after 37..Bc4 as 38 c6..bxc 39 Nxc6..e3+! 40 Kxe3..Bxf1 41 Nxe5..Bxg2 would not have led to a win for White.
