  Phony Benoni: Twenty-five years earlier, the game Spielmann vs Duras, 1907 came down to this position with Black to play his 98th move:

The position should be a trivial draw, but Duras saw no harm in one last trick:

<98...Rf5+>

Now any king move holds the draw, but Spielman decided on

<99.Rf4??>

Apparently expecting 99...Rxf4+ 100.Kxf4 with an even more drawn K+P ending. But after

<99...Kg5!>

He resigned, since after the forces trade 100.Rxf5+ Kxf5 Black has the opposition and wins.

Fast forward to the final position of this game:

Now, with <52...gxh4 53.Rxh4 Rf5+>, Bgboljubov could have set up the same trap as Duras!

But, you know, I think Spielmann would have got it right this time. Some things you just don't forget.
