A typical Alekhine surprise. He played <21.Ra1>, and how could Bernstein be expected to see that as anything but rescuing the rook and protecting the a-pawn? Bernstein walked right into it with <21...Nc7> and Alekhine sprung the trap with <22.a4!>, threatening 23.Nb3 trapping the queen. Since 22...axb3 23.Rxa3 Qb4 24.c3 Qc4 25.Be2 wouldn't help matters, Black settled for losing the exchange with <22...Bc4 23.Nd7>. Note by the way that 23.b3 would fail to 23...Bb5!
