May-14-04  Benjamin Lau: Beautiful game! Although Karl probably should have drawn if he wasn't so stubborn.

plang: Shocked that there are not more comments on this game. Reti won brilliancy prize for it.

5 Bd2 not mentioned in my Mimzo Indian books. 7 dxc leaves theory. 12..Qe7 leaves the bishop without its best escape square; an alternative is 12..Rc8 leaving b8 for the queen if she is chased. 14..Ne5 would freed Blacks game after 15 Nxd6..Bxf3 16 gxf..Qxd6 (threatening 17..Qxd2); after Gilgs 14..Bb8 Black was worse. 17..e5! was very strong but 19..e4 gave the White a great square for his knight on d4 though Gilg was counting on a kingside attack that looked promising. Gilg clearly overlooked the beautiful 29 g4!. Nunn gave the best defense as 29..Qxg6 30 Rxe5..Bxe5 31 Nf5..Qf6 32 Rd6..Qxd6 33 Nxd6..Bxd6 34 g5..Rae8 35 h4 and he says this position is unclear. Instead, after Gilgs 29..Qxg4 he was quickly lost.
