Kibitzer's Corner
May-16-06  sneaky pete: Fatigue at the end of the series effected De La Bourdonnais more than his adversary. His position after 20... c6? is very promising. Instead of 24.e6 .. Staunton suggests 24.f6 gxf6 24.Ne4 .. with white advantage, but this is not very clear after 24... Kh8 25.Nxf6 Rf8.

White shouldn't have given up his unchallenged d-file rook. 22.Bxf7+ Kxf7 23.f6 .. with both rooks and the queen ready to participate in the attack looks winning.

Feb-01-12  Knight13: McDonnell violated the principle of "active rooks" with 42...Rc8?. ...Rd3+ followed by ...Ra3 would have been better.
Feb-01-12  Shams: <Knight13> Your question mark seems overly strict. Black first protects the pawn, then activates his rook a couple moves later, a plan which bags him the full point.
Feb-01-12  Knight13: <Shams> Hmm... Okay, 42...Rc8?! ought to do it. :-)
Jan-10-14  john barleycorn: Is this the first game in the later so called Morphy attack with 9.Nc3. <Nimh> has given a computer analysis which does not identify 9....Sf6 as a mistake.

Here is probably the first game in which 9....Nf6 is refuted.
