Oct-08-04  Knight13: 58. b4! and black is in trouble. 50... Rf8 looks better to me. I think white won because white had a better defend positions in the end game. Good game.

Chessical: <Knight 13> Your suggestion of <50... Rf8 looks better> does not work whichever R on the file is used due to <51...Rxf3>.

This is a chaotic game in which De La Bourdonnais discounts the danger to his K, MacDonnell then misses the winning line in a flurry of combinations and then goes into a hopeless endgame.

Macdonnell would have better chances with <22...Nf3!> 23.Rd1 Nxh2 24.g3 (24.Nd5 Qg7 25.Rfe1 Nf3 26.Qc3 (26.gxf3 Rg8) ; 24...Nxf1 25.Rxf1 Be5

From the original game, <30...Rf3!> 31.Nd5 (31.Bxf3 Qh6+) 31...Rg3; would have achieved the advantageous rearrangement of his pieces on the K-side he appears to have been contemplating.

Feb-01-12  Knight13: 35...Ra8 provides better defense.
Feb-04-12  Knight13: 23...Be5 24. Nd5 Qf7 25. Rc1 Rd7 26. Rc3 only makes Black uncomfortable.
Jan-13-19  PatrickGJr: 24.) RxKnif3 White is really lost here ExRf3, 25.) KxBh2, Rd4, 26.) Qc5, RH4!+,27.) Kg1, Fxg2! 28.) Bxg2, RG8, 29.) And White can't play F3 given that leads to a forced mate, to which black is threatening to 2x the rooks upon the g- file. 29.) Knid1 looking to maneuver the knight to E3 so as to provide extra needed protection to the G2 bishop ,F4 stopping Knie3 30.) F3, RxBg2+, 31.) KxRg2, Qg6+, 32.) Kf2. Rh2, 33.) Ke1, Qe6+, 34.) Knid3, QxKnid3+, 35.) QxQknid3, FxQd3, 36.) Whatever white plays, Black has should probably have a won endgame.
