Johann Lowenthal devised one of the oldest ways of playing the Sicilian, the odd-looking ...e5 push. Black is willing to accept a backward d-pawn but has many ways to remedy the problem, often making use of his active knights. The opening is full of traps, and can confuses an opponent looking to play more modern lines. The 9...d5?! gambit is one that I've been experimenting with lately.
