"In the spa house of the Bad Harzburg began, on Sunday, the international chess tournament jointly organized by the Greater German Chess Federation and the Bad Harzburg, which is likely to remain the most significant one of the year. The champion of Germany, Kieninger (Cologne), won with the white pieces a queen gambit against the native Preuße. Petrov (Latvia) made a draw against Sämisch (Berlin). Bogolyubov (Bad Triburg) made a draw against Eliskases (Innsbruck). Yugoslav Pirc defeated former German Champion Richter (Berlin). The game between Lokvenc (Vienna) and Heinicke (Hamburg) was adjourned.
The second round of the International Chess tournaments was played in the morning of the second day (June 27). After four hours only two games were finished. Sämisch (Berlin) won against Preuße (Roßlau). The Yugoslav Pirc and Bogoljutbow made a draw. The remaining three games were continued afternoon. Kieninger won against Eliskases, Richter against Heinicke. Lockvenc (Vienna) and Petrov (Latvia) made a draw."

"In international chess tournament on Wednesday two rounds were held for the first time. In the four-hour morning season from the five games three came to the conclusion. Eliskases won as expected over Preuße. Pirc defeated Sämisch after 29 moves. Heinicke needed only 25 moves to defeat the German champion Kieninger. His predecessor in the German national championship Richter won against Petrov. Lokvenc Bogoljubow game was adjourn.
In the fifth round, afternoon, only one game was finished. Kieninger won against Lokvenc. Sämilch has advantage in his game against Heinicke, Pirc against Preuße. Richter has better chances in adjourned game against Bogoljubow. In adjourned game Petrov - Eliskases both having equal chances."

In some of newspapers result of Preuße was 1.5/9. It can not be correct, assuming that other results are OK. The total of points should be equal 45 (10x9=90; 90/2=45).

An article about the Bad Harzburg 1938 tournament was published in Polish chess magazine "Szachista", Nr. 7-8, 1938, pp. 104-105: "The grand masters tournament in Noordwijk, Netherlands just finished and battle area already moved to Harzburg, Germany. While in the Netherlands, the number of foreign guests prevailed significantly, as only Dr. Euwe and Landau represented home country, this ratio in Germany was just the opposite. Only grand masters invited from abroad were Pirc and Petrov.
Judging from the list of participants it was expected that the first violin will play Eliskases, a famous winner in Noordwijku. Petrov and Pirc were considered as a dangerous competitors to him. However, it happened differently. And this time, the paper calculations failed.
The fate of the chess master is similar to the fate of a soldier in the war. Defeats and victories are his share. This time the fate of Austro-German Eliskases was not too good for him and pushed him down. It was more kind to the Yugoslavian Pirc pushing him to the first place.
The old-guard, Bogolubov, also ended the tournament happily, just like Pirc without a defeat and took second place.
The "terrible" star of Latvia, Petrov, failed completely. It is regrettable that since the great tournament in Kemeri, this undoubtedly capable chess player, despite frequent participation in international tournaments, faces failures.
The tournament's result were as follows:
Pirc 6.5, Bogolubow 6, Kieninger 5.5, Heinicke and Eliskases 5, Lokwenc and Petrov 4,5, Samisch 4, Preusse 0.5.
Among the interesting results are two defeats by Eliskases, with Pirc and Kieninger and Petrov's results: 1 defeat (to Heinicke), 1 win (against Preusse, and 7 (!) draws."

like Pirc without a defeat and took 2nd place.
