Staunton - Jaenisch (1851) Compiled by MissScarlett
The match apparently took place at Staunton's country home in Cheshunt, although other reports mention the St. George's CC, the venue for the main London tournament. It seems likely that Jaenisch stayed there as Staunton's guest, with the pair evidently being on good terms. ILN of August 16th, p.219 reports match in progress with Staunton ahead 3-0. ILN of August 30th, p.267, reports the contest has ended during the previous week. Therefore, all but certain that the entire contest took place during August. Game 9 appeared on the 30th. The final score is in doubt. Staunton winning +7 -2 =1, according to the ten games given in his tournament book, but elsewhere +7 -2 =2 was reported (TCP, vol.i, p.62). Walker in <Bell's Life in London>, October 5th 1851, p.8: The describing games played by Major Jaenisch and Mr Staunton, as games played in the St George's Chess Tournament, is part of the old humbug we so constantly set our faces against. The tournament was over when Jaenisch began to play; for two or three battles, one against one, cannot enter into a tournament, and none could be admitted as a tournament player (well) when the tournament was over. But as Jaenisch comes off so decidedly beaten, the motive for the false description stands out pretty strongly. Had he beaten Mr Staunton his games would probably have for ever slept in the shade.
