Hoogovens Blitz 1999
Compiled by Tabanus
--*--

Played in De Moriaan community centre, Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands, 18 January 1999, on the first resting day of the Hoogovens Group A (1999) tournament. Only one of the grandmasters was missing: Alexey Shirov, who had been treated by a dentist and was under the influence of anaesthesia. He was replaced by Manuel Bosboom, an agile blitz player. Bosboom lost his first three games but he won five games in all and was the only one to beat Kasparov. The games were recorded by the CCS, the Chess Control System of Lost Boys interactive. The time control was 5 minutes per player per game. Despite his loss to Bosboom, Kasparov won convincingly with 10.5/13 and netted 5,000 Dutch guilders (about $2,570 or $3,900 in 2019 value). According to Gert Ligterink, the blitz was tiresome for the two eldest players Timman and Yermolinsky, who both lost in the main tournament the day after. The blitz started in the evening at 7 pm.
