Horowitz was unable to play in the 1940 US championship because he was still recovering from injuries sustained in an automobile accident two months before the event. He was on an exhibition and promotional tour in the midwest with his business partner Harold Morton when the accident occurred in Iowa, killing Morton and leaving Horowitz with serious injuries. This, the first US championship match held since Game Collection: Marshall -- Ed. Lasker 1923 match, was sponsored by the US Chess Federation in the "off" year between the 1940 and 1942 championship tournaments with the understanding that the winner of the match would be US champion until the 1942 tournament.

Originally planned as a fourteen-game match, two games were added to make it a match of sixteen games. Game 1 was played at the apartment of Maurice Wertheim, president of the Manhattan Chess Club. The time control was 32 moves in 2 hours. For most of the remaining games, the time control was 40 moves in 2.5 hours, but a few games used the original time control of 32 moves in 2 hours. Games were held in a variety of locations:

13. 26 May -- YMCA, Hazelton, PA
14. 27 May -- Marshall CC, New York
15. 28 May -- Sherman Square Hotel, New York
