Tilburg Fontys 1996

The first international chess tournament to be held under Fontys sponsorship (previously the tournament had been sponsored by Interpolis) was a category XVI event conducted in Tilburg, The Netherlands from October 10th to the 23rd. Twelve grandmasters, many of them from the emerging generation of players, participated in the round robin event, including (in order of ELO): Anatoli Karpov (2775), Michael Adams (2685), Alexey Shirov (2685), Boris Gelfand (2665), Judit Polgar (2665), Zoltan Almasi (2655), Peter Svidler (2650), Peter Leko (2630), Joel Lautier (2620), Loek Van Wely (2605), Jeroen Piket (2580), and Emil Sutovsky (2565). Piket and Gelfand had phenomenal performances, tying for first without either losing a game. The final standings and crosstable are as follows:
