The 34th Annual Hoogovens Chess Tournament was a category XI event held in Wijk aan Zee, The Netherlands in 1972. Nine grandmasters and seven masters competed in a round robin format in the prestigious invitational event. The participants were (in order of ELO): Lajos Portsich (2630), Vasily Smyslov (2620), Vlastimil Hort (2605), Vladimir Savon (2570), Borislav Ivkov (2560), Walter Shawn Browne (2530), Pal Benko (2515), Jan Smejkal (2515), Ljubomir Ljubojevic (2510), Arturo Pomar-Salamanca (2510), Jan Hein Donner (2500), Andras Adorjan (2475), Jan Timman (2445), Hans Ree (2430), Kick Langeweg (2425), and Robert Hartoch (2400).
