"The Dutch organizers usually look for top players, or at least players with fighting spirit. Their selection for this year's grandmaster group at the 15th IBM tournament was extremely successful, for I have not seen such interesting chess played at the IBM in years. Ljubomir Ljubojevic, the main contender for first prize, was expected to create fireworks. So was Jan Timman. Laszlo Szabo could easily have kept up the sharp pace; and I did not intend to remain in the shadows. Both Jan Smejkal and Robert Hueb ... [more]

 | | Sally Simpson: Hans Bohm made the mistake of writing to Donner's editor complaining Donner did not give him credit and praise for his performance in this tournament. First of all Donner states Bohm's performance was spectacular, Ljubojevic's was better and players should ignore critical remarks... (I'm thinking what about journalists being criticised, should they not also ignore it - Donner didn't.) Donner adds;
"I must say that it was rather with amazement than with admiration that I watched Bohm play. Such unambitious, such feeble, such cowardly chess, in particular, has rarely been demonstrated." He then reminds Bohm that soon he will be playing in the Alekhine Memorial (1975) (Donner calls it the Chigorin Memorial) advising he should not go. (see what happened.) I've not come across Donner hooting a 'I told you so.' it appears he let '...the chess speaks for itself.' |
