Dec-16-23  ortznoi: I think HATRED RULES att Chess. Com. For as long as these haters are still there they hate So so much and they will deny So the honor and gloryyy So so deserved!!!!!!!!

Atterdag: Not that this deserves a serious response, but just to make things clear, I have never seen the slightest expression of hatred towards the chessplayer Wesley So on any site anywhere at any time.

All negative expressions on So have been directed towards the few individuals who think they do him a service by propagating for him in a fanatic, idiotic, one-tracked, ridiculous way, while in fact doing the opposite.

In sharp contrast to these "fans" Wesley So always appears polite, balanced and erudite - at the venues, in interviews and elsewhere.

  Sally Simpson: Hi Atterdag,

It used to get very hot here regarding Wes. A lot of the bad posts were cleaned up. Wes himself appeared saying he should not be used a punching bag and reminding those who give negative comments are seeing his games for free.

Wesley So (kibitz #188680)

It has to be said that Wes did bring a lot flak onto himself with that awful article from Wes in NIC. which IMHO should never have published as he was clearly written in anger and had nothing at all to do with chess. Hopefully time has healed that family rift.

  Atterdag: Hi Geoff,

Thanks for this verification. I forgot the things you mention, and evidently they shed a different light on Mr So's innocent appearence. Still, it's not So himself who annoys us - at least me - but his fanatic fans and their crazy conspiratory theories of So being held back by sinister haters.

I already regret responding to the provocation! :-)

perfidious: So long as one understands that, inter alia, in that fantasy world, a score of +15 =30 is superior to +30 -15, all will be sweetness and light.

Atterdag: After 3 games, one win each and a draw, Carlsen wins the 4th game. In a worse, but not decided position So played 22.-Rb5?? allowing Carlsen to cage the rook with 23.Bc5 thereafter winning the exchange and the game.

A convincing win by the former champ, who can carry $ 200 K to his bank for the first price.

Dec-16-23  stone free or die: Looking over at <chess24>, which keeps the move times, it looks like So blitzed out 24...Rb5 (no time recorded for the move).

https://chess24.com/en/watch/live-t...

He appears to be under some time pressure, but not enough to explain the oversight entirely.

Happens.

  Atterdag: Hi <stone->

I think it may have been the shocking 21.b4! that sort of pushed So out of balance. I followed it live, and the three commentators were equally surprised by that move.

It's beyond me why So didn't choose the natural retreats of the rook to either d7 or d8 instead of b5, but we cannot rule out the immense pressure of sitting opposite to Carlsen, knowing this superior position and setup is right down his alley. Usually So keeps his cool against Carlsen, but the body language of the two in this game is quite telling.

Dec-17-23  stone free or die: <Atterdag> I'll play over the game carefully some more - but on first pass I think 21.b4! has a lot of Carlsen's hallmarks (as in "right down his alley") in it even if it's not first choice of an engine.

Maybe I should see if I can watch the video from the game.

dheilke: It seems Wes was trying to keep the R on the 5th rank to stop Bh5+! which is crushing in some lines.

Atterdag: Maybe so, <dheilke>. 14.-f6 caused this severe weakening of the white squares, which, of course, was immediately spotted by Carlsen. Already two moves later his Be2 became a permanent threat on the diagonal e8/h5. But after a game we are all much wiser! :-)
