Capablanca Memorial (Elite) (2006)

The 41st Capablanca Memorial was a 6-player double round robin held from 21-30 November 2006 in Hotel Habana Riviera, Havana, Cuba. The event had to move from its normal dates in May/June because of the 37th Chess Olympiad (2006). The Ukrainian Vassily Ivanchuk won his 2nd title in a row by finishing with 6.5/10.

Please explain your justification for saying that Bruzon is "overrated." Then tell me what your statement says about how well statistics is taught at your school. Or perhaps you haven't taken that class yet?
Dec-10-06  Whitehat1963: Lazaro Bruzon Batista was born on the 2nd of May 1982 in Cuba, and began to compete internationally during his teenage years. In 2001 he became World Junior Champion and won the Lausanne Young Masters event ahead of future top-ten players Ruslan Ponomariov, Etienne Bacrot, and Levon Aronian, among others. In 2004 Bruzon entered FIDE's world top 100 in ratings by winning the B-group of the Corus Chess Tournament at Wijk aan Zee. He also became Cuban Champion in 2004, and that fall he scored 8.5/11 on second board at the Calvia Olympiad, recording a 2771 performance rating.

Bruzon's steady rating gains continued into 2005, when he made an even score at the Corus Chess Tournament (2005) against an average opposition rated well over 2700. Other successes that year included a second consecutive Cuban Championship and the American Continental Championship (2005).

Clearly overrated, indeed!

I never said he was overrated.
You offer one game for justification for, I assume, how good he is. If you want justification for my point, look at his poor, at best, preformances in numerous tournaments.

An example of this can be seen with the American guy who was ranked 2nd in the U.S. by beating up on lower ranked guys in prison (can't remember his name).
Dec-15-06  code13: Yes Claude Bloodgood (you can check him out on the player directory) who attained a 2700 plus rating beating casual players within his prison. Bloodgood himself said this was a flaw due to "closed pool sampling". There is also a thread on the Susan Polgar page about a USCF bigwig allegedly getting himself a master title by submitting results of tournaments against is casual player friends and acquaintances.

All Elo ratings are just an estimate, even Prof Elo would have said that.

Nevertheless, if I were to beat Anand in a game with classical time controls (or any, frankly), I'd be shouting from the rooftops! My point is that if he is good enough to beat Anand in the odd game, become world junior champion, score above the likes of Ponomariov, Aronian and Bacrot in a tournament and win the B-group at Wijk aan Zee, then he can't possibly be overrated. But you want to defend the fool who made that claim?
