Jan-04-07 | | ardarel: I am very pleased to see that Dr. Volf Bergraser was chosen today: Jan/04/2007, as the player of the day.
A full time rural medical doctor in his beloved country of adoption, he played mostly correspondence due to the lack of chess activity in the place he used to live.
Ocasionally he attended live chess competitions, but it was quite seldom, due to his time taking professional activity. In spite of that, he managed to be twice french champion, and be present in several olympiads (in five of them both as player and capitain). He was a very good chess amateur,a truly nice person,a responsible family man, and cultivated individual with whom you could speak about almost everthing. He succeded to escape a concentration camp during WWII, to join the french army as a medical officer. After it was over, he was distinguished with a well deserved decoration.
In his old age he continued to play competitive chess, but correspondence only ( at that time he was already living in Toulouse), getting his CGM title at the age of 77!.
He was my father's youngest brother.
Peace, |

* ".. Il était aimé et reconnu de tous pour sa modestie, son pragmatisme et le sérieux de son analyse. Il ne possédait pas de bibliothèque échiquéenne et ne faisait confiance qu'à son analyse personnelle. Il a développé considérablement la théorie de la défense scandinave qui était sa grande spécialité. .." (source: Europe Echecs 337, 1987) |

 | | GrahamClayton: When I started playing CC with the Correspondence Chess League of Australia in 1979, I remember one of Bergraser's games against Australia in the ICCF Olympiad preliminary groups being featured in the CCLA magazine. He would have been aged 75, and was still playing top level CC. |
